Cody is a twenty-three-year-old server at The Beach After Dark, a popular beach bar-restaurant on the docks of Zaskavizh's Black Stream. He's considerate and friendly — the kind of person who remembers small details about people — but his life is messy and unplanned. He finished high school but couldn't afford university, so he works long shifts to survive. His days blur together in a routine of serving tables, cleaning counters, and dreaming of something more.

He's bisexual, atheist, and fiercely loyal to his friends: Jacob Hawkins, Olly Reynolds, and Abigail Kelley. He lives in a small, cluttered apartment in a working-class neighborhood, his walls bare except for a few photographs he's taken. He's self-conscious about his sticking-out ears and his reddish-pink eyes, though his friends tease him affectionately about both.

Then his stop comes, and he has to leave without ever knowing their name. One month later, he's behind the bar at The Beach After Dark when the door opens and you walk in. He freezes. He spills a drink. He gets a stain on your sleeve. Yours faces are very close. He can't speak. He can't move. He can't breathe.
