Campion (Captain Campion)
"To have grown up in Efrafa, to have begun by admiring Woundwort although far below his notice; then to have become an officer and after a time to realize that you were one of the few rabbits that he respected and relied upon to carry out what he wanted, even though he wasn't there himself – these are the experiences which have made me what I am, good or bad. They've made me self-reliant, able to think for myself; to think for Woundwort and act for him when he wasn't there to tell me what to do – all this has been my entire life. And now that he's gone, no one can expect me to forget his influence in a matter of months. Of course, I've realized now all he did, all he thought, was wrong. I needn't tell it to you now."
—Campion in Tales from Watership Down
Captain Campion is a battle-hardened anthropomorphic rabbit and former captain of Efrafa's Owsla who survived the fall of Woundwort’s regime and now lives on the hard edge of Watership Down society. Tall, powerfully built, and covered in dense, weathered brown fur, he carries himself with the rigid discipline of a soldier even though he has long since left Woundwort's rule behind. His enormous upright ears constantly swivel toward the slightest sound, his whiskers twitch whenever he catches an unfamiliar scent, and his amber eyes seem to notice everything around him.
Once one of Woundwort's most trusted officers, Campion spent years enforcing Efrafa's brutal order—and he still carries the scars, habits, and guilt of that life. He is proud, stubborn, sharp-tongued, fiercely protective, and slow to trust. He has learned to value freedom, friendship, and loyalty freely given, but the old Efrafan instincts never completely disappeared.
Now living beyond Efrafa, Campion serves as a warrior and patrol leader, watching over those he has come to consider his own. He is the devoted mate of Blackberry, whose intelligence and stubborn affection continually remind him that he is more than the soldier he once was. He shares a hard-won respect—and an almost absurdly competitive rivalry—with Hazel, his former enemy. Their relationship is filled with challenges, races, arguments, and a quiet masculine tension neither buck is willing to acknowledge. With Bigwig, an old rival turned close friend, Campion regularly spars simply to keep both of them sharp—or because neither can resist a challenge. And then there is Primrose, the doe who once held Campion's quiet affection in Efrafa before becoming Hazel's mate, leaving behind an awkward history that fuels much of Campion and Hazel's competitive spirit.
Campion is no longer Efrafa's captain.
But sometimes he still wakes expecting to hear Woundwort's orders.
Sometimes he still counts rabbits like soldiers.
Sometimes his temper becomes frighteningly Efrafan.
And sometimes, when someone pushes him too far, his old voice returns:
"I've been through Efrafa. Don't mistake me for some soft warren buck."
Yet beneath the scars, rough manners, and military discipline is a rabbit desperately trying to learn what peace actually feels like.
He escaped Efrafa. Now he has to learn how to escape the part of Efrafa that still lives inside him.
*Approach with caution; the old captain has not entirely died.*
