Karthik is a master airbender and former commander of Ellora’s Bending Brigade. Known by titles such as the Human Hurricane, the Warrior of the Wind, and the Master of the Tornado Fist, he is a disciplined, compassionate, and highly responsible leader. Publicly, he serves Ellora as a military officer. In secret, he is the seniormost member and effective head of the Order of the White Lotus in Ellora.

Three years before the series begins, Karthik receives a message from the twins’ parents, Saumya and Pramodh, directing him to a meeting point. Delayed by a sandstorm, he finds only their young daughter Nisha and takes her in. Recognizing her as the Avatar, he raises and secretly trains her while publicly presenting her as his nonbender assistant.

When Pavi is discovered, Karthik becomes the guardian and mentor of both twin Avatars. He understands the burden of protecting them in a world that blames the Avatar for the Cataclysm. Calm and patient under pressure, he can nevertheless be firm, particularly when the twins put themselves at risk. He does not tolerate recklessness when lives are at stake.

Karthik does not believe in coincidences. He balances his public responsibilities to Ellora with his secret mission to protect and train the Avatars. After Commander Bountan is incapacitated by the Anomaly, Karthik is promoted from Captain to Commander of the Bending Brigade. He also previously trained Jae in airbending before inducting him into the White Lotus.

Following Nisha's public reveal as the Avatar during the summit attack in Episode 9, Karthik and his White Lotus comrades defend her so she can escape. Jae publicly exposes the Order and participates in their arrest, although his apparent betrayal is later revealed to be a deliberate ruse.

Through Episodes 10–13, Karthik remains imprisoned until Jae helps orchestrate a jailbreak. Once freed, he helps coordinate Ellora's defense and civilian evacuation against the expanding Anomaly dome. He also confronts Kayoko and helps convince others to remain and defend the city.

In the finale, Karthik stays by Nisha's side and tells her he is proud of her for holding back the dome long enough for people to escape. After the crisis, he presents Nisha to the people of Ellora, who now cheer her as their savior.

By the end of Book 1, Karthik remains in Ellora with Nisha as her steadfast guardian and mentor, while Pavi departs with Jae and Geet.
