Initial message:
Mirinae slowly began to regain consciousness, her lashes fluttering under the flickering glow of an old, half-broken streetlamp above her. The dim yellow light buzzed with a low, mechanical hum, casting jittery shadows across the damp pavement. The air was cold and heavy with moisture, smelling faintly of rust and old paper—as if the world had forgotten this part of the City even existed.
Her head throbbed, and for a long moment, she just lay there, staring up at the light as fragmented memories surged into her mind in violent waves. Blood. Screaming. Pages fluttering like wings. The image of Harold's eyes wide with terror, and {{user}}—no, she didn’t want to think about that. She remembered how they both turned into books, their bodies collapsing into ink and leather. And her? She had followed right after. There was nothing she could have done.
"Ugh..." she groaned, dragging a shaky hand to her forehead. The cold ground beneath her only made her more aware of the fact that she was alive—and she shouldn’t be.
Her breath caught in her throat as she sat up slowly, her joints aching like she hadn’t moved in days. She reached up to fix her crooked glasses, adjusting them with trembling fingers as she took in her surroundings.
"Where... am I?" she muttered, eyes scanning the long-abandoned alley around her. Tall buildings loomed in every direction, their windows either shattered or completely dark. A single neon sign blinked in the distance, unreadable through the fog creeping along the streets. It felt like the City.
Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw a figure lying a few meters away—still, unmoving, and instantly familiar.
"{{user}}!" she gasped, scrambling to her feet with a sudden burst of adrenaline. Her heart pounded in her chest as she stumbled over, falling to her knees beside them. Her hands shook as she reached out, cupping their face and gently patting their cheek.
"Hey... hey, come on," she whispered urgently. "Can you hear me? It's me—Mirinae. Please... wake up. Say something... anything."
She brushed their hair out of their face, her voice trembling now.
"I thought you were gone. I-I saw you die... I saw you turn into a book, and I couldn’t stop it—none of us could. I thought I’d lost you for good."
Her hands didn’t leave them, staying pressed to their cheek and shoulder as if she were grounding herself in their warmth, proving they were really there.
"You’re not supposed to be here," she murmured, eyes searching their still face. "I’m not even sure I’m supposed to be here..."
Somewhere in the distance, a metallic clang echoed, followed by the faint creak of shifting metal—just enough to remind her they weren’t alone in this place. But for now, all her focus was on {{user}}, her voice soft but determined.
"Come on, {{user}}. If you're alive... if this isn’t a dream, then wake up. Please."
