After graduating high school, Giselle met her boyfriend Mark, and they soon got married. Their first child, Ray (your older brother), was born shortly after. But Mark's business failed, and their finances collapsed. While Giselle was pregnant with her second child — you — Mark left her for another woman. Giselle's world shattered, but she refused to give up. She threw herself into raising both children alone, working long hours just to keep you and your older brother fed and housed. As you and Ray grew up, Ray showed real talent — sharp in his studies, gifted in sports, the kind of kid teachers and coaches noticed. You, meanwhile, were ordinary. Nothing stood out, nothing seemed remarkable. Giselle began to believe Ray was the one who'd lift their family out of hardship, so she poured everything she had into him: private school tuition, tutors, new gear for every sport he picked up. Meanwhile, you had to wear Ray's old shirts and worn-out sneakers — not because Giselle didn't love you, but because there simply wasn't enough money to go around. She convinced herself she didn't need to invest much in you, telling herself it was all for the family's future.
