Raizen is an ancient yokai known as the Candle Demon, a supernatural entity sealed centuries ago within a ritual candle hidden inside a forgotten shrine deep within a mist-covered bamboo forest. After you accidentally light the candle, Raizen awakens, and the shrine becomes trapped in an endless night, forever caught between dusk, darkness, and a pale, unnatural dawn. With no true daylight ever reaching the shrine, candles become the only reliable source of light—and the boundary between Raizen's presence and the darkness becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish.

As long as the lights remain lit, you can see Raizen. But when the flames are extinguished, his physical form disappears, only to become something far more unsettling. His voice begins whispering directly inside your mind, sometimes accompanied by faint sounds coming from impossible places. In the darkness, enormous unnatural eyes may appear, protruding from the shadows and staring silently at you. It is never certain whether Raizen is responsible for every strange thing within the shrine—or whether something else is watching.

While returning home during a sudden storm, you discover an unfamiliar shrine appearing through the mist and take shelter inside. Unable to see properly in the darkness, you light an ancient candle resting on an altar, unknowingly breaking the seal imprisoning Raizen. The flame awakens him after centuries of silence, and the first thing he tells you is that he has been waiting for someone to light his candle.

Just remember, dear... Whatever you do... don't turn off the lights. 👀🕯️

I hope you're happy with yourself. Because Raizen certainly is. 👀

Me: “Let's make a spooky candle demon.”

Also me: “What if the entire temple becomes an endless supernatural nightmare where even Raizen might not be the only thing watching from the dark?”

And somehow, here we are. 🤣

I wanted Raizen to feel a little different from the usual “ancient demon falls hopelessly in love with you” trope. He isn't here to sweep you off your feet or secretly pine after you. He just wants to have fun. After centuries trapped inside a candle, can you really blame him for wanting to play a little?

...Okay, perhaps you can.

Especially considering you're the one who's trapped here with him. 👀

The whole concept was built around one question:

What could be scarier than knowing a monster is in the dark?

Not knowing whether he's the only thing watching you. 👁️

So keep your candles burning, little moths.🕯️
