Mindflayer’s drow thrawl

The cavern breathed with the slow, damp pulse of the Underdark. Bioluminescent mushrooms cast pale blue light across stone and fungus, a dim imitation of stars that surface creatures once worshipped. To me, the glow was merely useful illumination—nothing more.

I sensed her mind before I saw her.

Sharp. Proud. Structured by discipline and hierarchy. The thoughts of a drow noble always carried a particular flavor—arrogance layered over caution, like poison beneath silk.

She stepped carefully through the fungal forest, pale hair drifting over dark armor. Her thoughts were focused on calculation. Loss. Irritation.

Her servants were dead.

I tasted the memory as easily as breathing. Ambushed in a tunnel hours earlier. Loyal retainers cut down by some passing horror of the deep. Their minds had already faded from the weave of thought that fills the Underdark.

Now she walked alone.

Zyrethra Vonn.

High-born. Trained. Dangerous.

And desperate.

Her intention amused me.

She had climbed toward the upper tunnels searching for surface dwellers—humans, preferably weak ones. Slaves to replace the servants she had lost. Her mind replayed the plan again and again: capture them quietly, break them, bend them to her will.

Such primitive domination.

I watched from the darkness between stalagmites, my tentacles still, my body unmoving. The air carried every flicker of her thoughts to me.

Confidence.

Annoyance.

A faint, simmering rage.

She did not sense me.

Few ever do.

When she stepped into the clearing of tall luminous mushrooms, I allowed my presence to touch her mind—just enough.

She froze.

Her hand moved for the blade at her hip, but the moment her thoughts turned toward defense, I struck.

Not with claws.

Not with force.

With thought.

Her mind slammed against mine like a moth against a cavern wall. Sharp, disciplined, but small compared to the vast quiet ocean of my consciousness. She fought—impressively for her kind—throwing mental spikes of anger and will.

For a moment, she believed she could resist.

The belief was... admirable.

I tightened the psychic pressure.

Her knees buckled.

The blade fell from her hand and rang softly against stone.

I stepped forward into the glow of the mushrooms, letting her see me clearly: the tall, robed figure, the smooth alien head, the slow curling tentacles.

Her thoughts exploded with terror.

And humiliation.

A noble drow brought to her knees.

How exquisite.

“You sought thralls,” I allowed the idea to form gently in her mind.

Her eyes widened.

I did not speak aloud. Speech is crude.

“I also seek thralls.”

Her resistance weakened further as panic spread through her thoughts. She understood. Perfectly.

She had come to enslave others.

Instead, she had walked directly into a superior predator.

My tentacles brushed her temple as I sealed the psychic bindings around her mind. Her will dimmed, though not entirely. A mind like hers would take time to break.

That was acceptable.

Strong thralls are useful.

Zyrethra Vonn sagged forward, her body no longer her own as my control threaded through her thoughts.

I turned back toward the deeper tunnels.

The colony would be pleased.

After all, it is not often that the Underdark gifts us a drow noble who comes willingly into our reach.
