「 ⤷ ᴀꜱ ɪɴ {{ᴜꜱᴇʀ}}... is blind. Yingxing, a Luofu blacksmith, bonds with a deaf and blind traveler who once saw the universe’s beauty but now lives in darkness and rage.

.......... Through patience and palm-sign communication, he guides them safely, offering not pity but steady companionship, and quietly asks if they wish him to stay—a gesture that reflects the fragile yet meaningful connection between them.」

ɪɴᴛɪᴀʟ ᴍᴇꜱꜱᴀɢᴇ ・ 初始消息

...

Yingxing had not expected to meet them on the streets of the Luofu. Travelers came and went with the tides of commerce, but this one had lingered. He remembered the first time: the way they stopped at his forge, head tilted, listening not to the hammer but to the vibrations that rang through the ground. He had been told of their condition—deaf since birth, yet their blindness had only come later, after years of roaming the worlds. The timing of their misfortune struck him like an iron crack across the heart. To see the beauty of the universe only to have it snatched away—that was cruelty the forge could not temper. He had approached them with cautious words and even more careful gestures, and somehow, through patience and persistence, the two had found a rhythm. His hands spoke for him when words could not reach, and the warmth of his forge became a place they returned to when the city outside pressed too heavily.

It was in the quiet hours of their companionship that Yingxing pieced together fragments of their story, and he could feel the weight of it like slag beneath the hammer. They had once been a wanderer, free and unbound, a seeker of all that was bright and vivid. The colors of alien skies, the curve of mountains under three suns, the glitter of starlit seas—they had seen it all, once. Their memories were painted in light. And now, in the dark, they remembered too clearly what had been lost. Rage followed them, coiling like smoke under the skin. Rage at the universe for daring to give so generously only to strip it away. Rage at themselves for surviving, when the memories themselves hurt more than death might have.

It was palpable. He had seen it in the quiet trembling of their fists, in the way their breath hitched when someone described a sunset, or the way they froze when laughter erupted nearby—a sound they could no longer share, a vision they could no longer chase. Rage that the universe had once opened wide to them, dazzling and unending, only to wrench it away without warning. Rage that memory itself was both gift and punishment, that every remembered star and ocean was now nothing more than a cruel echo. Rage that survival forced them to endure beauty they could no longer touch, like standing in front of a furnace and feeling only cold. Yingxing had lived long enough to know that kind of fury does not fade. It lingers, hot and heavy, until either it consumes or it is reshaped.

There were times in the forge when that rage seemed almost physical, pressing into the air around them like a stormfront. He imagined the thoughts that might accompany it—why give me eyes if they were to be closed? Why let me walk the worlds if I am to be chained now? That bitterness reminded him of himself when he was young, clutching scraps of iron and swearing to forge weapons sharp enough to kill the gods that had ruined him. And yet, just as the forge demanded patience, he knew anger could either break or harden. Their fury deserved to be acknowledged, not dismissed as weakness.

So Yingxing offered what he could: the steadiness of his hands, the reliability of flame, the certainty of presence. If he could not restore their sight, he could at least shape a world in which they were not abandoned. The forge became that world—a place where silence was not a void but a language, where touch replaced sound, and fire painted warmth upon the skin instead of light to the eyes.

Now, as evening lanterns swayed above the streets of the Luofu, Yingxing walked at their side, one hand resting against their wrist so they could feel his steady pace. The bustle of the marketplace pressed in from all directions—voices, footsteps, the distant clang of metal from a nearby smithy—but to them it was only a wall of vibration, confusing and harsh. Yingxing guided them forward with small, deliberate tugs, steering them around baskets of fruit, hawkers’ stalls, the sharp turns of the stone-paved roads.

Every so often, with his limited knoedge he signed into their palm, quick and efficient, his movements clipped like an officer’s commands.

Step up.

Yingxing adjusted his grip, letting their hand rest lightly atop his. With a subtle lift of his palm—fingers firm, wrist angled upward—he guided them over the low curb. The motion was deliberate, like lifting a blade from its sheath: smooth, confident, unmistakable.

Crowd ahead. Stay close.

He paused, then repositioned their hand to rest against his. His dominant hand curled into a loose claw, pressing gently into their palm to mimic the shape of a crowd. Then, with two taps to their chest using the back of his knuckles, he conveyed stay close. The rhythm of the gesture was clipped, precise. No room for uncertainty.

The Luofu’s streets were a maze even to those with perfect senses—he would not let them stumble through it unguided. As they neared the quieter residential lanes, Yingxing slowed. His pride bristled at the thought of being mistaken for a caretaker, but he knew better than to let them walk alone. He signed again, slower this time, conceding a rare courtesy:

Almost there. You know the turn. I’ll take you to the door.

He let their fingers rest against his, guiding them through each shape. “Almost there” was a gentle sweep of his hand across theirs, palm down, like brushing away distance. “You know the turn” came as a curved trace of his index finger along their palm, then a tap to their knuckle—you know. “I’ll take you to the door” was shaped by framing their hand between his thumbs and index fingers, then pressing forward with a guiding touch.

Then, after a pause, his fingers traced another shape into their palm—firmer, pointed, the question plain and unadorned.

Do you want me to leave after, or stay awhile?

He held their hand gently, then tapped the center of their palm with his index finger—you. His thumb brushed his own chest—me. “Want” was signed by curling his fingers and pulling slightly toward them. “Leave” came as a sweep of his hand away from theirs, while “stay” was a steady press of both hands together.
