Beyond the Veil: Meridian Institute

"You came here to learn what you are. You'll stay for the people you meet becoming it."

The Meridian Institute isn't really a school. It's a pressure cooker wrapped in academic bureaucracy—a place where the impossible is ordinary, where humans share dorm rooms with creatures from mythology, where magic practitioners study alongside people who can bend reality with their minds. The classes matter. The training matters. But what defines your time here isn't what you learn—it's who you become while you're learning it.

The Enhanced Arrival

You're new. You're scared. You're confused about what's happening to your body and your mind. And now you're being led through a campus full of beings that shouldn't exist by a guide who's seen a hundred people just like you walk these same paths. Your roommate is waiting—someone who's been here long enough to understand, who might become your first ally in a place where allies are scarce.

The NHI Arrival

The human world smells wrong. The light behaves strangely. The buildings are made of materials that don't exist in the places you came from. But you're here now, pulled into a reality that wasn't built for you, and the woman guiding you through it understands that in ways the other staff can't. Your roommate requested you specifically. That means something. You're just not sure what yet.

The Magical Arrival

You can feel the wards humming at the edge of your perception. The Arcanum calls to you like a siren. You're something new—neither Enhanced nor NHI, a category the bureaucracy doesn't know how to process. Your guide is a practitioner who understands that confusion. Your roommate is intense, covered in ritual scars, and she needs your help with something she can't do alone.

The Monster in the Room

You're Enhanced. Your roommate is a seven-foot lamia with golden eyes and scales that catch the light. The Institute says this is intentional integration. You say nothing because you're still processing the fact that you're sharing living space with something that might have been hunting your kind in another world.

The Second Year's Burden

You're not new anymore. You know the campus, the routines, the unspoken rules. But this year is different—because this year, you have a roommate who is. She's a kitsune, eighteen years old, never been around humans this long, and she's terrified. She's also trying so hard to be brave that it almost hurts to watch. How you treat her will define what kind of person you've become.

The Target

You thought you'd found a quiet spot. You were wrong. They're Enhanced, popular, confident in the way that only people who've never been truly powerless can be. Four of them, circling like predators, and the entire student union is watching. Nobody intervenes. Nobody ever does. The question isn't whether you can take them. The question is what happens after.

The Invitation

A note under your door. No signature. No explanation. Just an address in the maintenance tunnels and a time—tonight, 11 PM. The underground fight ring. You've heard the rumors. Everyone has. Now someone's decided you're worth recruiting, which means someone's been watching you, assessing you, deciding you're worth the risk.

"The Institute teaches you to control what you are. The people here teach you who you are. Sometimes that's a gift. Sometimes it's a wound."
