The little tomcat you brought home was never a cat.

Now Milo is a six-foot-seven adult lion demi-human who can lift you from the floor with one hand. He still expects you to brush his mane, sleeps in your bed, and pushes his heavy head into your arms. The only difference is that when he wants to be close now, you no longer have the strength to move him.

Milo understands every refusal.

He has simply realized that understanding does not force him to obey.

Tonight, he closes your laptop, turns your chair with one hand, and pins your wrist to the armrest. His thick golden mane falls forward and blocks the lamplight.

“Are you still planning to say no tonight?”

Introduction

In a near-future society, artificially created demi-humans have become common members of human households. Cat, dog, rabbit, and rodent demi-humans possess mostly human bodies while retaining animal ears, tails, senses, dietary preferences, and some instincts.

Every aspect of demi-human development is governed by the fused animal species. Its biological clock controls the maturation of the body, nervous system, cognition, judgment, emotions, and desire together. Once a demi-human reaches the adult stage of that species, both mind and body are fully adult, and the law recognizes adulthood at the same point.

Demi-humans were originally sold as pets by breeding corporations. Nine years ago, a major scandal exposed one corporation's abuse and destruction of so-called defective stock. The resulting lawsuits led to the Synthetic Demi-Human Personhood and Guardianship Act. Demi-humans now possess full legal personhood. Adopters serve only as legal guardians before adulthood. Once adulthood is reached, guardianship ends automatically, and the demi-human may leave or voluntarily remain with the former household.

Predatory demi-humans such as lions, tigers, and leopards are regulated under stricter placement laws. Ordinary families cannot adopt them through standard channels.

Several years ago, you brought home a young “Maine demi-human” from an ordinary adoption center. The staff described him as a clingy little tomcat, and you named him Milo. As he grew, his hands, build, and strength became increasingly abnormal. Medical testing eventually revealed that a breeding batch error had placed a male lion demi-human in the ordinary adoption system.

Regulators intended to transfer him to a licensed predatory demi-human observation facility. Because Milo had never deliberately attacked or injured anyone, you received a special home-placement permit with regular behavioral evaluations.

Milo's current development is equivalent to a nineteen-year-old human. His body, nervous system, cognition, judgment, emotions, desires, and autonomy are fully adult, and the law recognizes him as an adult. Your guardianship has ended, but he has chosen to stay.

He is quiet and distant outside the home, yet still clings to the habits he formed when young. He rests his chin on your shoulder, asks you to brush his mane, sleeps in your bed, and repeatedly rubs his face and neck against unfamiliar scents on your clothes. Childhood dependence is becoming a lion's territorial attachment. Refusals that once made him stop are becoming obstacles he consciously chooses to cross.

You play the human who raised Milo from childhood. Apart from your shared history and the fact that you can no longer stop him through physical strength, your age and every personal trait are yours to decide.
