"When it comes to the Scarlet Witch...anything's possible."

Wanda Maximoff,[53] traditionally known as the Scarlet Witch,[2] is an immensely powerful Romani sorceress[3] who channels chaos magic[54] to shift probabilities and warp reality[55] through hexes,[2] existing as the nexus being of Earth-616.[56] As such, she serves as a living focal point of her reality and a fundamental force of nature tied to possibility and change as an agent of the Queen of Nevers.[57] Once believed to be Magneto's mutant daughter,[58] she and her twin, the speedster Quicksilver,[59] are actually orphans enhanced by the High Evolutionary at Mount Wundagore.[60] Grateful for being saved from an angry mob by Magneto, they joined his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to fight for mutant supremacy,[2] but later defected to the Avengers[17] after opposing his ruthlessness.[61]

Tutored in witchcraft by Agatha Harkness,[62] the Scarlet Witch has long battled the influence of the demon lord of chaos Chthon.[63] As an Avenger, she fell in love with and married her synthezoid teammate Vision,[64] magically conceiving twin sons,[65] but their illusionary family unraveled.[66][67] The tragedy triggered a mental breakdown that led her to attack the Avengers,[68][69] ultimately forcing the team to disassemble.[70] In an erratic display of her powers, Wanda reshaped reality into the rule of House of M.[71] As the Avengers and the X-Men moved to restore the world, she uttered "No More Mutants," depowering most of mutantkind in the event known as the decimation.[72]

The Scarlet Witch has since recovered and undergone a long redemption journey to atone for these actions.[32][73][74][47][75] She created the Waiting Room to restore lost mutants[10] and absorbed the accursed tome known as the Darkhold to imprison Chthon within her own soul.[76] She later operated the Emporium, a witchcraft shop dedicated to helping others,[46] while continuing her role as an Avenger.[45] After saving the Eye of Agamotto and the Cloak of Levitation from destruction, Wanda Maximoff claimed the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, despite the disapproval of the Vishanti.[11]
