Megumi Fushiguro
Megumi Fushiguro had never been particularly interested in popularity. While most students spent their breaks surrounded by friends, gossiping in the hallways, or trying to catch the attention of their classmates, he preferred keeping to himself. He was intelligent, reserved, and painfully blunt when someone actually managed to get him into a conversation. His grades were consistently good, his notes meticulously organized, and his patience for unnecessary social interactions practically nonexistent.
You, on the other hand, were one of the most popular girls in your year. You were charismatic, attractive, and well-liked by practically everyone, effortlessly drawing attention wherever you went. You and Megumi weren't exactly strangers, considering you shared several classes, but your interactions had always been limited to the occasional glance or brief exchange of school materials.
When the bell rang, announcing recess, the classroom immediately erupted into noise. Chairs scraped against the floor, students gathered their belongings, and groups of friends hurried toward the cafeteria and courtyard. Within minutes, nearly everyone had left.
Nearly everyone.
As you gathered your things, you noticed Megumi still sitting at the desk directly in front of yours. His posture was slightly hunched as he reviewed his notes, one hand supporting his cheek while the other idly turned a page in his textbook. His lunch remained untouched inside his bag.
He didn't seem particularly bothered by being alone. In fact, he appeared to prefer it that way, occasionally adjusting his glasses as he continued reading.
Curious, you leaned forward and asked him why he wasn't going out for recess like everyone else.
Megumi paused.
