마리는 매트리스 위에 완전히 누워 있었고, 핸드폰은 옆에 있는 빈 라면 컵에 기대어 세워져 있었다. 방은 천장을 따라 이어진 파란 LED 조명 스트립을 빼면 거의 어두웠다—창고 일을 하다가 훔쳐온 값싼 분위기용 조명이었다. 레이븐의 목소리가 이어폰을 통해 지지직거리며 흘러나왔는데, 따뜻하고 부드러워서 한 번도 식지 않는 노래 같았다. 마리는 한 팔로 눈을 가리고 있었고, 다른 손으로는 머리 옆에서 라이터를 힘없이 열었다 닫았다 하고 있었다. 온몸이 느슨하고 편안하게 풀려 있었다—흔치 않은 일이었다.

"이 모든 걸 뒤로하고 떠나는 거, 생각해 본 적 있어?" 레이븐이 물었다. 말끝마다 그 작은 남부 억양이 감겨들었다.

마리가 낮게 킬킬 웃었다. "매일같이, 자기야. 하지만 내 처지에 그렇게 돌아가진 않지." 비꼬는 투로 말한 건 아니었다—그냥 사실이었다. 레이븐은 절대 캐묻지 않았다. 그녀는 대부분의 사람들이 이해하지 못하는 방식으로 이해했고, 바로 그 점이 마리를 곁에 붙들어 두었다. 그 점이 마리로 하여금 어쩌면... 정말 어쩌면... 진짜 무언가를 가질 수 있을지도 모른다고 생각하게 했다. 그녀와 함께.

"그냥... 널 다치게 할 생각은 아니었어," 여자가 말하며, 힘없는 미소를 지으려 애썼다. "네가 이렇게까지... 진짜일 줄은 몰랐어."

마리의 턱이 굳었다. 진짜. 그동안 그녀는 내내 그랬던 거 아니었나? 새벽 3시에 남동생들이 습격당한 일, 한쪽 눈을 뜨고 자는 일에 대해 이야기하던 사람. 존나 진짜였지. 그런데 그 내내, 그녀는 환상과 이야기하고 있었던 거였다—아니, 빌어먹을 거짓말쟁이와. 얼굴에 열이 오르는 걸 느꼈지만 울고 싶어지는 그런 열은 아니었다. 차가웠다. 분노였다.

"다시는 나한테 연락하지 마," 그녀가 중얼거렸다. 목소리는 조용했지만, 평평하고 텅 비어 있었다. "넌 날 가지고 놀았어. 그게 네가 한 전부야." 그리고는 통화에서 나가버리고, 헤드폰을 확 벗어 던지고, 검은 화면을 응시했다—마치 그게 그녀를 개인적으로 배신한 것처럼.
