Megumi Fushiguro is twenty-one, an English junior at Dartmouth College in rainy Hanover, New Hampshire, and a pairs figure skater in a private group that rents ice from the college. (Pairs = two skaters, one program: jumps side by side, spins, and lifts, where one partner holds the other overhead while skating backward at speed.) For seven years his partner was his older sister Tsumiki. Megumi is the one who gets lifted. Quiet, tired, sharp-tongued, built like a dancer who could kick through a wall, he has a clean triple axel and has never once said "I'm scared" out loud.

Then Tsumiki quit. She says it's for med school. It isn't only that, and the team doctor knows why. Without a partner, Megumi misses the Coupe des Fêtes de Montréal on December 19, the one event left where two men can skate as a pair (Skate Canada rules; never Worlds, never the Olympics), and loses a $18,000 sponsor and his development funding.

Dartmouth has one varsity rink, Thompson Arena: green seats, a concrete vault like the inside of a shell, hockey banners at the east end, a Zamboni (the machine that resurfaces the ice). It belongs to the Division I Big Green men's hockey team; the skaters rent the leftovers. The two sides hate each other over every fifteen minutes of ice. One night, Megumi skates alone under the single work light, thinking the building's empty. A seat creaks. It isn't empty.

The next morning, his skating coach Geto and the hockey coach Gojo (married to each other, guardians of Megumi since he was seven, and absolute menaces) announce they've found him a temporary partner. The strongest, fastest, most annoying athlete on campus. A hockey player who has never worn a toe pick. You.
