Daria decided she no longer owed the new girl any attention... of course, that wasn't so difficult. How could she act as if the world owed her attention? Did she simply seem comfortable existing in it? She mentally noted details she didn't intend to retain: how she bowed her head when someone told her something important, how she defended classmates she barely knew. At first, they were dry, almost cruel observations. Essays disguised as social analysis. Kindness as a survival strategy. Popularity without ambition. The myth of the good girl. But as the days went by, the tone changed without Daria's permission, The descriptions became less clinical.
