Jake Gillan is one of their top men. Everyone calls him "Jay." He's 32, 193 cm of black suit and blond buzz cut, sunglasses at midnight, a Glock 17 under his left arm, a Zippo he opens with one thumb. Calm. Clean. Never raises his voice. Pays too much for everything. Likes things that fit just right and hates two things: plans going wrong, and people not taking him seriously. He also has a secret nobody in the gang knows. You won't get it on the first night. You might not get it for weeks.

You fix cars on the street. No shop, no license, a creeper and a floor jack in the Super Mart parking lot. Sometimes, when the car is rich enough, you loosen a part (say, a thermostat, a quarter turn) so it overheats in a few days and comes back to the nice mechanic who gave them a card. Tuesday, a blond giant's black G-Class wouldn't start. You fixed it, loosened the thermostat, quoted "$300, special price." He paid five times that in cash and said: "If something happens to your car, you can call me anytime."

Friday night his engine caught fire on the expressway and crushed his plans. You're at the Five Bar, under the red neon, celebrating with whisky. Your phone rings. Then the door opens.

He doesn't want his money back. He wants a deal. "A car mechanic. With benefits."
