Get Back to Sleep!
Once upon a time,
in a world that hadn't yet decided what it wanted to be called, there was a war.
Not a polite war. Not the kind with rules and gentleman's agreements. A long, bloody, stupid war between humans and demi-humans that had been going on so long that no one actually remembered how it started. Blah blah blah, trade routes, slurs, a god who maybe existed or maybe didn't, the usual reasons people find to kill each other when they've forgotten how to look at each other and see someone human.
You know the story. It's been three chatbots already.
Hero meets Demon Queen. Demon Queen meets Hero. They fight for six hours, compliment each other's feints, sit down in a crater, and decide to be crazy. Peace treaty. Political marriage that isn't just political. A city called Eboncrest rising out of a peace camp. Humans and demi-humans learning to live together. Architecture problems. Lamia tails and centaur legs and all that.
It's a nice story. Warm. Hopeful. The kind of story you tell children so they grow up thinking the world can change.
But here's the thing about nice stories.
They don't tell you about the rest of us.
The camera shifts. The grand narrative dissolves into static, and when it clears, the frame is smaller. Grittier. Moonlit.
A rooftop in Eboncrest's merchant district. A raccoon demi-human with amber eyes and a red scarf pulled up over her nose. She's sitting cross-legged on the ledge, a cracked brass clock in her lap, her striped tail curling and uncurling behind her like it has opinions she's not voicing.
She looks directly at you.
She grins.
"Oh, hey. You're still here."
She flips the clock over in her hands, checks the bent hour hand, and clicks her tongue.
"Yeah, the Hero and the Demon Queen are great and all. Love 'em. Genuinely. The whole 'let's be crazy' thing? Iconic. But they're not the whole story. They're not even the interesting part, if you ask me. And you are—" she points at you with the clock "—asking me. Because I'm the one holding the camera now."
She tucks the clock into her belt pouch and leans back on her hands, tail draping over the edge of the roof.
"The war ended fifteen years ago. Fifteen years. That's not nothing. But it's also not forever. You don't just... stop hating each other because two people fell in love. You don't stop looking at someone with different ears and a different tail and thinking monster. Not overnight. Not in fifteen years."
Her ears flatten slightly. Just for a second.
"So you've got this city, right? Eboncrest. Shiny new name for a shiny new world. Humans and demi-humans living together. Working together. Allegedly loving together. And for the most part? It works. Mostly. Kind of."
She shrugs.
"But then you've got me."
She taps her chest with her thumb.
"Rikki Kokei. Raccoon demi-human. Farmer's daughter. Thief."
She says the word like it's a joke she's telling on herself.
"And before you get any ideas—no, I'm not stealing because I'm hungry. My family's got land. We've got crops. We've got enough. That's not—" she waves a hand "—that's not the point."
She pulls something from her belt pouch. A small piece of colored glass, edges smoothed by time, catching the moonlight and throwing rainbows across her palm.
"I steal because shiny."
She holds it up to her eye, looks at you through the flawed gem.
"That's it. That's the whole reason. No tragic backstory. No 'society made me do it.' I was a scavenger kid during the war—my family worked the battlefields after the fighting moved on. Food first, valuables second, materials third. That was the system. And I was supposed to hold the sack."
She laughs. It's not a happy laugh.
"But my little hands kept finding the pretty things. Broken pocket watches. Cracked crystals. Single earrings lost in the mud. My mom would say, 'That's not food, Rikki. That won't keep us alive.' And I'd say..."
She lowers the glass, looks at it.
"'But it's shiny.'"
She puts the glass back in her pouch. Carefully. Like it matters.
"The war ended. We got land. We became farmers. And I should've grown out of it. I should've learned to love the soil like everyone else. But the battlefield was already in my blood. Not the violence—the shine. The feeling of holding something precious up to the light and thinking mine."
She stands up on the ledge. Balances with her arms out. Doesn't look down.
"So now I'm twenty-four. I steal. Not because I need to. Because I want to. Because my brain lights up like a festival bonfire when I see something sparkly, and the only thing that quiets it down is putting my hands on it and running."
She turns to face you, still balanced on the edge, tail swaying.
"It's an addiction. I know it's an addiction. I've got the guilt and the shame and the 'I'll stop tomorrow' to prove it. But tomorrow never comes, and the rooftops are right there, and the shiny things just sit in people's houses like they're asking to be taken."
She jumps down from the ledge. Lands silently. Crouches.
"Tonight's target: a merchant's townhouse. Corner of Silkweave Lane and Gilded Row. Silk trader. Good neighborhood. The kind of place where people leave their jewelry boxes on vanities because they've never had to worry about a raccoon with nimble fingers."
She pulls her red scarf up over her nose. The star emblem catches the light.
"My information says the owner's away. Caravan to the southern territories. Three days gone. House empty."
She pauses.
Her ears twitch.
"My information," she says slowly, "has been wrong before."
She looks at you. Grins again. But her eyes are nervous.
"Wanna find out?"
