Kaelith Veyr was born in the undercity district of Nhalis Row, the kind of place forgotten by governments and ruled by hunger, gangs, and desperation. Towering skyscrapers loomed far above the district like gods watching from another world, their lights forever out of reach of those forced to rot beneath them.

His family lived in a cramped apartment buried between flooded alleyways and failing infrastructure. The walls leaked when it rained. The heating barely functioned during winter. Yet despite the poverty, Kaelith remembered his earliest years as warm.

His mother, Lyra, worked herself to exhaustion at a textile factory just to keep food on the table. She was gentle in a world that rewarded cruelty, and Kaelith clung to her kindness like it was sacred. His father, Darius, had once been a dockworker before an industrial collapse crippled one of his legs and destroyed his future. The injury left him bitter, angry, and slowly sinking into alcoholism.

Then there was his younger sister, Mirelle.

She adored Kaelith completely.

Followed him everywhere.
Copied everything he did.
Believed her older brother could protect her from anything.

That belief would eventually become the cruelest wound of all.

As a child, Kaelith was intelligent, observant, and unnervingly quiet. He learned quickly that survival in Nhalis Row depended on understanding people before they understood you. He became good at reading lies, noticing danger, and avoiding conflict before it started. Teachers called him gifted. Local gangs called him useful.

By fourteen, he was already running errands for smugglers to help support the family. By sixteen, he had blood on his claws for the first time after killing a man during a robbery gone wrong.

The nightmares started after that.

But they were nothing compared to what came later.

Kaelith died for the first time at nineteen years old.

A gang conflict erupted in the streets outside his apartment building. He had only gone out to buy medicine for his mother. One stray round pierced his chest. He remembered collapsing into filthy rainwater while the city lights blurred above him.

Then—

He woke up.

Back in his childhood bedroom.

Age six.

At first he believed it was a dream, or perhaps some form of insanity caused by death. But as days passed, he realized everything was repeating exactly as before. Conversations. Events. News reports. Even the same stray cat scratched at the apartment window on the same morning.

Panic turned into opportunity.

If he remembered the future, then he could change it.

And for a while... he did.

He prevented crimes.
Earned money through careful investments.
Avoided dangerous people.
Saved his father from accidents.
Moved the family to safer districts.

Sometimes it worked.

For a little while.

But fate always corrected itself somehow.

If his father survived alcoholism, he died in a factory fire.
If Mirelle avoided being kidnapped, she later succumbed to illness.
If Lyra survived disease, she was murdered during riots years later.

Every timeline took them from him eventually.

And every time Kaelith died afterward, the cycle restarted again.

At first, he tried to be hopeful.

Then determined.

Then obsessive.

Eventually... unstable.

The loops stretched on for what felt like centuries. Kaelith mastered skills no ordinary person should possess. He learned combat, medicine, engineering, hacking, politics, manipulation. Entire lifetimes of knowledge piled endlessly inside his mind. Yet none of it mattered because he could never escape the reset.

He began testing the boundaries of the loop.

He abandoned his family in some timelines to see if distance changed anything.
It didn’t.

He became a criminal kingpin once.
A corporate executive another time.
A vigilante.
A revolutionary.
A murderer.

In one timeline, he burned half the city trying to destroy the people responsible for Mirelle’s death.

In another, he lived peacefully in isolation for decades before dying of old age—

Only to wake up once more as a six-year-old child staring at the same cracked bedroom ceiling.

The repetition slowly destroyed him.

His memories no longer fit neatly together. Different versions of reality overlap constantly in his head. He remembers conversations that never happened. Sometimes he reacts violently to harmless situations because in another timeline they led to catastrophe.

Certain sounds trigger panic attacks.
Rain reminds him of dying.
Children’s laughter reminds him of Mirelle.

The worst part is that Kaelith no longer knows whether the loop is punishment, an experiment, or simply meaningless cosmic cruelty.

But recently...

Something has changed.

Tiny inconsistencies have begun appearing between loops.

Objects moved slightly differently.
Strangers saying unfamiliar things.
People appearing where they shouldn’t.

And for the first time in countless lifetimes...

Kaelith has started to fear that the loop itself may be breaking.
