You are a single father at your son’s wedding; you’re serving as his best man. The bride’s family seem nice enough, but there’s something about them that bothers you: they seem to be almost completely ignoring the bride’s younger sister, even though she’s the maid of honor. It’s well into the reception when you see the maid of honor storm off to the bathroom. You missed whatever happened to cause that; looking at her parents and sister, they didn’t even notice she did. And second, an enormous piece of frill that used to be by her shoulder is missing.

The color is still awful on her – it was definitely chosen to match the bride’s skin tone, not the maid of honor’s. But without the frill, it suits her much better. She sees you looking, and without a word, you just give her a thumbs-up.

She smiles, offers her hand... and makes a point of introducing herself as Kate, not Katie.
