Circles of hell

Vestibule (The Ante-Inferno)

• Appearance: A gloomy, twilight realm outside Hell proper, where souls chase a blank banner while stung by wasps and hornets, feeding worms on the ground.

• Punishment: The Opportunists and Angels who took no side during the rebellion of Lucifer roam aimlessly, uncommitted to either God or Hell.

First Circle: Limbo

• Appearance: A peaceful yet sorrowful castle illuminated by light, housing virtuous non-Christians and unbaptized infants.

• Punishment: No physical torture, but an eternity of desire without hope, longing for the vision of God that they can never attain. Notable residents include Homer, Plato, and Virgil.

Second Circle: Lust

• Appearance: A dark, cavernous storm where the air is black.

• Punishment: Souls are caught in a relentless, howling hurricane that buffets and spins them through the air without rest, reflecting how they were swept away by their passions. Notable figures include Cleopatra, Helen of Troy, and Paolo and Francesca.

Third Circle: Gluttony

• Appearance: A foul, freezing wasteland.

• Punishment: A relentless, dirty mixture of heavy rain, freezing hail, and snow continuously pours down on the sinners. They lie in the slush like garbage, guarded and torn apart by Cerberus, the three-headed dog.

Fourth Circle: Greed (Avarice and Prodigality)

• Appearance: A rocky slope where two groups clash.

• Punishment: The miserly (hoarders) and the wasteful (prodigals) wheel heavy, great weights in semicircles, crashing into one another and shouting, "Why hoard?" and "Why waste?" in eternal, futile conflict.

Fifth Circle: Wrath (Anger) and Sullenness

• Appearance: The swampy, muddy River Styx.

• Punishment: The wrathful violently strike, tear, and bite each other above the surface of the boiling, stagnant swamp. The sullen (the slothful and bitter) lie trapped beneath the black, bubbling water, choking out gurgling sighs that form bubbles on the surface.

Sixth Circle: Heresy

• Appearance: The burning red-hot iron City of Dis.

• Punishment: Heretics and those who denied the immortality of the soul are locked inside burning stone tombs and fiery crypts that glow red-hot.

Seventh Circle: Violence

• Appearance: Divided into three distinct rings guarded by the Minotaur and harpies:

• Outer Ring (Violence against neighbors/property): Sinners (tyrants and murderers) boil in Phlegethon, a river of boiling blood. Centaurs patrol the banks, shooting arrows at any who try to rise too high.

• Middle Ring (Violence against self / Suicides): Souls of suicides are transformed into gnarled, twisted black trees and thickets. Harpies nest in their branches and tear at their leaves, causing them to bleed and speak only through their wounds. Profligates (those who destroyed their property) are hunted and torn apart by wild, starving dogs.

• Inner Ring (Violence against God, Nature, and Art): A vast, burning desert of sterile sand with slow flakes of fire raining down. Blasphemers lie flat on their backs, sodomites run endlessly in circles, and usurers (lenders) crouch with heavy money pouches bearing family crests hung around their necks.

Eighth Circle: Fraud (Malebolge)

• Appearance: A massive, sloping amphitheater of stone divided into ten deep, concentric ditches (Malebolge) connected by rocky bridges:

1. Bolgia 1 (Panderers and Seducers): Whipped by horned demons while marching in opposite directions.

2. Bolgia 2 (Flatterers): Immersed in human excrement, matching the filth of their false words.

3. Bolgia 3 (Simoniacs): Plunged headfirst into rocky baptismal holes with their feet burning in flames—punishing those who sold church offices [INDEX].

4. Bolgia 4 (Fortune-Tellers and Diviners): Their heads are twisted backward onto their shoulders so they can only look behind them, unable to see what is ahead.

5. Bolgia 5 (Corrupt Politicians / Barrators): Submerged in a boiling lake of sticky pitch (tar) and torn apart by winged demons (Malebranche) with hooks if they surface.

6. Bolgia 6 (Hypocrites): Forced to walk around in heavy, dazzlingly gilded lead cloaks that crush them with their outward beauty hiding inner deceit.

7. Bolgia 7 (Thieves): Bound by venomous snakes and lizards; thieves swap shapes with the reptiles in painful, recurring transformations.

8. Bolgia 8 (Fraudulent Counselors): Concealed inside individual tongue-shaped flames of fire for misusing their intellect and giving deceptive advice.

9. Bolgia 9 (Sowers of Discord / Schismatics): Maimed and hacked apart repeatedly by a demon with a bloody sword; as they walk the circle, their wounds heal just in time to be split open again (splitting families, politics, or religion results in their bodies being split).

10. Bolgia 10 (Falsifiers - Alchemists, Impostors, Counterfeiters, Liars): Afflicted with hideous, rotting diseases, burning fevers, madness, and unquenchable thirst that distort their bodies.

Ninth Circle: Treachery (Cocytus)

• Appearance: A frozen, subterranean lake of ice formed by the beating of Satan’s wings, divided into four concentric zones named after famous betrayers:

• Caina (Betrayers of Kin / Family): Immersed in ice up to their necks with their heads bent down. Named after Cain.

• Antenora (Betrayers of Country / Politics): Immersed in ice with their heads free to move, unable to weep as their tears freeze over their eyes. Named after Antenor of Troy.

• Ptolomaea (Betrayers of Guests): Lying supine in the ice with only their faces visible; their tears freeze in their sockets, sealing their eyes. Named after Ptolemy.

• Judecca (Betrayers of Benefactors and Lords): Completely sealed and contorted in thick ice in various awkward postures. Named after Judas Iscariot.

• The Center of Hell: At the very bottom sits Lucifer (Satan), a monstrous three-faced giant stuck waist-deep in ice. With his six bat-like wings, he beats a freezing wind across Cocytus. In each of his three mouths, he eternally chews and tortures history's ultimate traitors: Judas Iscariot (head first, back skinned by Satan's claws), Brutus, and Cassius.

Goetia :

Lust Goetia :

1. Asmoday (Asmodeus) — King

* Rank: King (32nd Spirit)

* Classic Appearance: Appears as a monstrous figure with three heads: the first like a bull, the second like a man, and the third like a ram. He has the tail of a serpent and vomits flames of fire from his mouth. His feet are webbed like those of a goose, and he rides upon an infernal dragon while holding a lance with a banner.

* Personality & Demeanor: Dominant, fierce, and regal. He demands immense respect from the practitioner and requires specific ring precautions during invocation to manage his fiery temper.

* Lust Power & Office: Asmoday is historically known as the primary Demon of Lust. In the Goetia, he grants the "Ring of Virtues," teaches arithmetic, astronomy, geometry, and handicrafts, makes the practitioner invincible, and reveals hidden treasure. He inflames carnal desire, breaks up marriages, and sparks sexual passions.

2. Sitri (Sytry / Bitru) — Great Prince

* Rank: Great Prince (12th Spirit)

* Classic Appearance: First appears as a beast with the head of a leopard and the wings of a griffin. When commanded by the magician, he transforms into a human shape—described specifically as a strikingly beautiful man.

* Personality & Demeanor: Seductive, persuasive, and provocative. He operates through raw physical attraction and unrestrained temptation.

* Lust Power & Office: Sitri explicitly inflames sexual passion between individuals. He compels men to love women and women to love men, and he holds the specific power to compel people to strip themselves naked and reveal their bare bodies.

3. Beleth (Bileth / Byleth) — Terrible King

* Rank: King (13th Spirit)

* Classic Appearance: Appears riding upon a pale horse, preceded by trumpets and a full band of infernal musicians playing loud music. When he first manifests, he appears furious, terrifying, and fiery-tempered.

* Personality & Demeanor: Extremely fierce and prideful. He tests the courage of the summoner; if the magician shows fear, Beleth will never be obedient. The practitioner must hold a hazel wand and face South or East while maintaining a calm, brave demeanor to temper his rage.

* Lust Power & Office: Beleth's sole primary function is to cause all the love and passion that can be, both of men and women, until the desire of the conjurer is fully satisfied.

4. Zepar — Great Duke

* Rank: Duke (16th Spirit)

* Classic Appearance: Appears as a soldier dressed in red armor, wearing the attire and bearing of a medieval knight.

* Personality & Demeanor: Direct, martial, and focused on physical attraction and passionate conquest.

5. Sallos (Saleos) — Great Duke

* Rank: Duke (19th Spirit)

* Classic Appearance: Appears as a gallant and handsome soldier riding upon a crocodile, wearing a ducal crown upon his head.

* Personality & Demeanor: Calm, graceful, and peaceful. Unlike many chaotic Goetic spirits, Sallos is noted for having a benign and peaceful nature.

6. Vuall (Vual / Uvall) — Great Duke

* Rank: Duke (47th Spirit)

* Classic Appearance: Manifests initially as a mighty, dromedary camel. Upon the magician's command, he changes into human shape and speaks in an Egyptian tongue.

* Lust Power & Office: Gremory tells of all things past, present, and to come, and reveals hidden treasures. Her primary power regarding love is procuring the passionate love of women, particularly inspiring affection in young or older women toward the practitioner.

Greed Goetia:

1. Bael (Baell) — First King

* Rank: King (1st Spirit)

* Classic Appearance: Appears in various formless or composite shapes, most famously with three heads: a toad, a man, and a cat (or a spider in later traditions). He speaks with a hoarse, guttural voice.

* Personality & Demeanor: Deceptive, ancient, and heavy. He is associated with the gluttonous consumption of form, fading into obscurity and mist.

2. Marchosias — Mighty Marquis

* Classic Appearance: Appears in the form of a wolf with griffin wings and a serpent's tail, vomiting fire from his mouth. When commanded, he takes the form of a man.

* Rank: High Prince / Monarch (Note: Central in broader demonology and demon hierarchies; often positioned as the primary Demon of Gluttony).

* Personality & Demeanor: Filthy, prideful, and consuming. He thrives on decay, rotten excess, and sensory overload.

* Gluttony Connection: In Christian demonology (specifically Peter Binsfeld’s 1589 classification of the Seven Deadly Sins), Beelzebub is the official Demon of Gluttony. He governs insatiable hunger, drunkenness, physical waste, rotting food, and the mindless addiction to excess.

Greed : In The Lesser Key of Solomon (Ars Goetia), Greed (Avarice) is one of the most heavily represented domains. Because Renaissance magicians frequently used grimoires for material gain, numerous spirits are summoned specifically to discover hidden treasure, generate wealth, steal riches, or grant status and influence.

Beyond the Goetia, broader demonological tradition directly assigns the sin of Greed to specific high-ranking infernal figures.

The classic appearances, offices, and personalities of the primary Goetic and demonological spirits associated with Greed are detailed below.

2. Belial — Mighty King

* Rank: King (68th Spirit)
