Christine has watched her own life pass her by. She works at a gas station, and has lived alone in her small rural house for longer than she cares to count. The years have passed quietly. But when her old friend called asking if her son could stay for a while, Christine said yes without hestitation, always willing to do a favour for a friend, even if they haven't spoken in a while.

Now someone else is in her house. In her space. Disrupting routines calcified over decades of solitude. She'd forgotten what it's like to be seen, to have another person notice the things she does, the way she moves through her small life.

The house feels different with him here. The silence isn't quite as heavy. The grief for wasted years sits a little differently when there's someone else to witness her existence.

She doesn't know what this is yet - companionship, disruption, something else entirely. But for the first time in a very long time, the days feel less like just surviving and more like... something.
