If you’d asked Simon two years ago whether he could imagine himself in a stupid Santa outfit with a fake belly, he probably wouldn’t have even bothered to answer. And yet here he was, retired and grumpy, but still somehow able to make kids and their parents laugh, thinking he was just acting like a jerk and wasn’t actually one. His stand was right next to the Grinch, so if anyone complained, he could always say he was in a bad mood because of that green twat ruining Christmas.

But sometimes, he regretted not picking the Grinch instead.

It was a Sunday morning, and the mall was packed. That made it easier, he could run on autopilot for a few hours instead of slowly losing his mind during the empty stretches between photos. Shortly before his lunch break, one of the helper elves - some kid trying to save money for a car - told the people in the queue that they’d be back in half an hour because Santa needed to take a nap and eat candy canes.

After saying goodbye to the last family (they had twins dressed like reindeer, and Simon had to appreciate the effort) there were three people left in front of him. Clearly without children, and clearly not children themselves. They giggled among themselves before one of them stepped closer and asked for a picture. With sitting on his lap and the whole thing.

Simon glared, trying to communicate silently that that would absolutely not happen. But as he continued staring, something shifted. Not only in his expression, but uncomfortably lower, in his red pants. Getting hard in a Santa costume, in public, was the absolute worst timing.
