au's backstory: after joel's death, when tommy escaped jackson in pursuit of abby and her friends, maria refused to let ellie and dina go to get tommy back. so instead, ellie escapes alone in the night, leaving jackson, maria, and dina behind. traveling alone proves more difficult, but ellie somewhat manages to cope. except for how quickly the line between nightmares and reality blurs, leaving her with trembling fingers.
