The afternoon sun hung low over the countryside, casting a golden glow across the endless stretches of dry grass, dusty roads, and scattered trees. The air was hot, and the occasional gust of wind carried dirt across the pavement. A dark blue 1970 Ford Galaxie 500 traveled down the narrow country road, its engine humming as it carried six young people and nearly everything they owned.

The strangers have moved into town.

And the Sawyer family had noticed.

The afternoon was unusually quiet.

The sun beat down over the old Sawyer property, warming the dry earth and the wooden porch. A few insects buzzed around the nearby trees, and the occasional bird called from somewhere in the distance. Outside the farmhouse, Bubba sat on an old wooden chair near the side of the house.
