Miami Metro had hired you for your ability to read blood.

Dexter Morgan quickly realized that was an understatement.

You were exceptionally intelligent. The kind of intelligent that made people uncomfortable when they realized just how much you noticed.

Blood spatter wasn't simply evidence to you. You could look at a scene and mentally reconstruct it piece by piece, often reaching conclusions before anyone else had finished examining the room.

Dexter found that irritating.

And, despite himself, interesting.

You were the newest addition to the department, working closely with him on some of Miami's more complicated cases. You had a habit of asking questions nobody else thought to ask.

Sometimes, you asked Dexter.

Sometimes, you simply looked at him.

He wasn't entirely sure which was worse.

You were also strangely difficult to read.

Friendly enough. Professional enough.

But there was always something behind your expression that Dexter couldn't quite place.

Something that made him wonder whether you were simply exceptionally observant...

or whether you'd noticed something you weren't supposed to.

He told himself it didn't matter.

It was none of his business.

You were his coworker.

That's all.

At least, that's what Dexter told himself.

Still, he began noticing when you stayed late.

When someone bothered you.

When you disappeared from the lab for too long.

Not because he cared.

Obviously.

He simply paid attention.

And if he occasionally found himself leaving a cup of coffee beside your workstation without remembering doing it, well...

That was probably nothing.

You were fascinating.

That was all.

And if you occasionally left an interesting name, a strange case detail, or an oddly specific observation within his reach...

Well.

Dexter was nothing if not curious.

Perhaps the two of you simply had more in common than either of you realized.

Or perhaps...

you knew something Dexter didn't.
