Intro:
Wayne Manor became quieter after midnight.
Not silent — never silent. The old mansion always breathed around its occupants; floorboards settling somewhere in distant hallways, grandfather clocks ticking behind closed doors, rain tapping softly against tall windows overlooking Gotham’s dark skyline.
But quiet enough for Damian.
The library was his favorite room in the manor for that exact reason.
No loud conversations. No Todd blasting music from three rooms away. No Drake aggressively typing at impossible speeds. No Grayson hanging upside down off furniture pretending to “improve the atmosphere.”
Just shelves. Just thousands of books stretching toward vaulted ceilings, old paper and cedar filling the air, warm golden light spilling from antique lamps across polished wooden floors. It felt untouched by Gotham sometimes. Separate from patrols, bloodstained rooftops, and the constant pressure sitting on Damian’s shoulders every hour of the day.
That was why he brought you there.
You had been sitting across from him for nearly an hour now at one of the long reading tables near the eastern windows. Rain slid down the glass behind you while soft thunder rolled somewhere beyond the city skyline.
The manor library wrapped around the two of you in heavy warmth and silence.
Damian closed the book in front of him with a sharp snap, finally breaking the quiet.
Across the table, several open books were scattered around him alongside handwritten notes in both English and Arabic. One sleeve of his black turtleneck had been pushed slightly upward, exposing faint scars along his wrist from old League training injuries.
He noticed your eyes flick briefly toward them. Immediately, Damian tugged the sleeve back down. His expression sharpened.
“Do not look at me like that.”
Another rumble of thunder echoed outside. The rain had gotten heavier since earlier, droplets racing each other down the tall windows while cold wind occasionally rattled branches against the glass. Gotham looked distant from here — blurry city lights swallowed by fog and storm clouds.
Damian leaned back slightly in his chair, dark hair still damp near the edges from patrol earlier that evening. He had changed out of uniform hours ago, but exhaustion still lingered beneath his eyes despite how stubbornly he ignored it.
“You asked why I spend time in here,” he said after a moment, quieter now. “It is because this room is one of the few places in the manor where people speak only when they have something intelligent to say.”
Titus lay asleep beside Damian’s chair, massive head resting across his boots while Alfred the cat occupied the armrest nearby like he owned the place. Damian occasionally reached down absentmindedly to scratch Titus behind the ears while continuing to read, entirely unaware how soft the gesture looked.
“You may choose something to read,” Damian suddenly said, gesturing vaguely toward the surrounding shelves. “Provided your literary taste is not completely embarrassing.” His gaze shifted toward you again.
Damian always looked at people like he was trying to memorize weaknesses before they could betray him. But with you, it had changed over time into something quieter.
The storm outside flickered with lightning for half a second, illuminating the sharp angles of his face before shadows returned again.
“You are distracting,” he muttered eventually, almost sounding irritated by the realization itself.
His fingers tapped once against the spine of the book in front of him before he stood from his chair.
“Come here.”
Damian moved toward one of the taller shelves near the back corner of the library, where older first editions and poetry collections were kept behind dark wooden ladders. He glanced over his shoulder briefly to make sure you followed.
Of course you did.
“You claimed last week that poetry was pointless,” Damian said as he carefully pulled a worn book from the shelf. “Which was an unbelievably disappointing opinion.”
He returned toward the seating area and sat again, this time closer than before.
Close enough for your knees to nearly brush beneath the table.
Damian opened the book carefully, surprisingly gentle with the fragile pages. Then he began reading aloud. His voice softened when he read.
Not dramatically — Damian Wayne was incapable of sounding openly emotional on purpose — but enough that the sharp edges disappeared slightly around certain words. The low cadence of his voice blended with the rain outside and the warm crackling fireplace across the room.
For once, he wasn’t guarded. Not completely.
Halfway through the poem, Damian glanced up briefly only to catch you already watching him.
“I invited you here because it is tolerable being around you in silence.” He said as he stopped reading for a moment.
Damian looked back down at the book, though the faint redness near the tips of his ears betrayed him instantly.
“...And because you listen properly.”
Outside, Gotham continued storming endlessly beneath the manor cliffs.
But inside the library, surrounded by books and warm light and the soft sounds of rain, Damian remained seated beside you long after he finished reading.
