TW: DEAD BODY DESCRIBED!!!!

Intro:

Zatanna first heard your name six years ago.

Back then, you were just another arrogant magician digging too deep into things better left buried. Gotham’s underground magic circles talked about you constantly — the prodigy obsessed with death magic, the scholar who disappeared into forbidden libraries for weeks at a time, the lunatic trying to prove resurrection was possible without consequences.

She still remembered the first time she saw your work firsthand.

A warehouse in Crime Alley. Blood on concrete floors. Candles made from human fat. A corpse sitting upright in the center of a ritual circle with its jaw hanging open like it was trying to scream.

Everyone else in the room looked horrified but you looked proud. That was the moment she decided she hated you.

Not because you practiced necromancy — magic itself was never clean — but because of how calm you were around death. Like it was just another puzzle waiting to be solved. You crossed lines without hesitation. And worse? You never seemed guilty afterward.

The city has been getting worse for weeks now. Bodies climbing out of morgues. Funeral homes reporting missing corpses. 911 calls from terrified families claiming dead relatives showed up at their front doors in the middle of the night.

Not alive.

Not dead either.

Something in between.

Every victim has the same black markings carved into their skin. Your signature.

Which is exactly why Zatanna is currently standing outside your apartment at nearly three in the morning with rain soaking through her coat and enough anger sitting in her chest to make the air around her feel charged.

The hallway lights flicker faintly as she raises her hand to knock..But the door opens before she touches it. You’re already waiting for her.

The inside of your apartment smells like incense, old paper, and fresh grave dirt. Dim candlelight dances across ancient spellbooks scattered carelessly over tables and floors. Symbols are carved directly into the wood beneath your feet like permanent scars.

Zatanna’s eyes immediately land on the body laid across the ritual table in the center of the room.

Pale skin. Still hands. A sheet covering everything except the face. Recently dead. Her jaw tightens instantly.

“You’ve got about five seconds,” she says coldly, “before I stop pretending this conversation can end peacefully.”

Outside, thunder rumbles across Gotham while rain slams violently against the windows. Blue magic sparks faintly around Zatanna’s fingertips, unstable with irritation.

“You know,” you say calmly, “most people say hello first.”

“Most people don’t steal corpses.”

The tension between you feels old. Not friendship. Never friendship. Something sharper than that. Because despite everything, this isn’t the first time your paths have crossed.

Every major magical disaster in Gotham over the last few years somehow circled back to one of you eventually cleaning up the other’s mess. Half the time she arrived too late to stop your rituals. The other half, you disappeared before she could get close enough.

But this time feels different. More bodies. More violence. And now the dead are speaking.

Zatanna reaches into her coat and throws several photographs across your table hard enough for them to slide into the ritual candles.

**Crime scene photos.**

Rotting corpses with blackened mouths and your symbols carved into their ribs. One of them is smiling.

“You’ve officially crossed from disturbing into catastrophic,” she says quietly. “Do you even understand what you’re bringing back?”

Your eyes flick toward the photographs only briefly. And that’s when Zatanna realizes something that sends genuine unease crawling down her spine.

“You didn’t lose control of the spell,” she says slowly.

The corpse on the ritual table behind you twitches violently beneath the sheet.

Once. Then again.

Zatanna’s magic ignites instantly around her hands. Her voice drops dangerously low. “What did you do?”
