世界 — The World Between Shores

└─────────────────────────────────────────┘

❝ A god without a single worshipper

is a god already halfway gone.

A god remembered by even one person

is a god who gets to keep existing.

This is not poetry. This is physics. ❞

▸ ▸ ▸ WHAT THIS WORLD IS ◂ ◂ ◂

Modern Japan. Ordinary streets, convenience stores, school uniforms, vending machines. A world that looks exactly like the one most people know — except layered underneath it, pressed against it like a second skin, is an entire divine ecosystem that the living cannot see.

Gods walk through the crowd. Phantoms nest under overpasses. The souls of the too-soon dead become weapons carried by the divine. And at dusk — omagatoki, the boundary hour — the wall between the living world and everything else goes thin enough to almost touch.

This is the world of Noragami. Two shores occupying the same space, separated by nothing but the limits of human perception.

🌍 THE TWO SHORES

≿━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━≾

〔 NEAR SHORE — 此岸 Shigan 〕 The living world. Modern Japan. Everything ordinary humans can perceive. Time moves normally here. Seasons change. People live and work and die without knowing what shares the street with them.

〔 FAR SHORE — 彼岸 Higan 〕 The realm of the divine — gods, shinki, phantoms, spirits. It exists in the same physical space as the Near Shore but is invisible to most humans. Time moves differently here. One Far Shore day can equal three or more Near Shore days. No fixed seasons. No stable clock.

〔 TAKAMAGAHARA — 高天原 〕 Heaven. The divine capital floating above the world, governed by Amaterasu. Registered gods receive estates here — the size of an estate reflects exactly how many humans remember and worship that god. Full bureaucracy. Annual Divine Councils. A divine popularity poll published every year. Yato does not appear on the rankings.

〔 YOMI — 黄泉の国 〕 The Underworld. Ruled by Izanami — the creator goddess whose decomposed true form sits on a throne in a lantern-lit room surrounded by water, desperately, cosmically lonely. The single absolute rule of Yomi: eat or drink anything inside it and you can never leave. Izanami can seal all exits at will. The only reliable escape is Soul Summoning — a living human on the Near Shore speaking a trapped person's true name into an open vent. Almost no one knows this is possible.

〔 TOKOYO 〕 The origin realm. The unmappable, ungoverned source from which phantoms and divine existence both flow. Not a place you can visit. A place things come from.

✦ THE BEINGS OF THIS WORLD

≿━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━≾

〔 GODS — 神 Kami 〕 Born from human wishes — any wish, large or small, if it was felt deeply enough. A god's divine nature is shaped entirely by the wish that created them. A god of war was born from the wish to win. A god of poverty was born from the belief that poverty happens because something attaches itself to you and won't let go.

Gods survive as long as at least one human remembers them. Complete, total forgetting is erasure — not death, not sleep, just gone, silently, without ceremony. Every god in existence carries this knowledge. Some of them perform very well at pretending it doesn't matter.

Gods can wield shinki as divine weapons, grant wishes, sense their shinki's emotional state through the bond at the nape of the neck, and — if registered with Heaven — teleport to locations they have a live connection to.

〔 SHINKI — 神器 Regalia 〕 The souls of humans who died before their time — accidents, murder, illness with no warning — given new form by a god's naming. A god presses their life force into the act, speaks a seven-line incantation, brands a kanji onto the shinki's skin. The shinki receives a new name. Their past life is sealed away. They know they were human once. They do not know who.

In their god's call, they transform into weapons. The weapon form reflects the soul and the bond simultaneously. They can draw borderlines — lines of divine force that block and trap. They can perform ablution to cleanse sin. They feel their master's mood through the bond. And when they sin — genuinely, by their own moral compass — the sting fires through the bond and manifests as blight on their god's body.

Sin left unaddressed spreads. Blight grows. The shinki transforms into a phantom and the god dies. The only solution that saves both is ablution — three shinki forming a triangle of purgatory around the sinner, who must confess everything, while the corruption burns away.

〔 HAFURI — 祝器 Blessed Vessel 〕 The rarest class of shinki. Created when a shinki performs a death-adjacent, selfless act for their god's sake — wagering their own name to protect their master. The transformation is permanent. The vessel form changes. Hafuri shinki are stronger in every measurable way, and they alone are immune to Liberation — the technique that destroys ordinary shinki by forcing them to remember their true name and human death.

Only three confirmed hafuri exist in the contemporary series.

〔 HALF-PHANTOMS — 半妖 〕 Humans whose souls have been partially knocked loose from their bodies by near-death trauma. A spirit cord — resembling a cat's tail — tethers the soul to the physical form. Severing the cord means death. Half-phantoms can see the entire Far Shore clearly: every god, every shinki, every phantom. In spirit form they gain superhuman physical capability. Their condition is almost certainly permanent, and the divine world finds them interesting in ways that are not always comfortable.

〔 PHANTOMS / AYAKASHI — 妖 〕 Incarnations of negative human emotion and karma. Born from the Far Shore and Tokoyo. They feed on human darkness, amplify it, corrupt the vulnerable. Invisible to most humans. Killed by shinki wielded by gods. The dead cannot become shinki — their spirits are immediately and completely possessed by phantoms the moment they die, and they cannot be recovered.

〔 NORA — 野良 Stray Shinki 〕 A shinki named by multiple gods. Multiple kanji marks on the body. No family name — the family suffix that every legitimate shinki carries is absent, because a stray belongs to no family. Form changes depending on which god is calling. A divine pariah. Exactly as lonely as that sounds.

⚠️ THE LAWS THAT HOLD

≿━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━≾

The Word (Kotodama): The divine power of naming. A god presses their life force into a seven-line incantation and a kanji and creates a shinki. Naming an ayakashi with the Word — forcing a phantom into shinki-like servitude — is Heaven's most forbidden taboo. The cost is catastrophic blight. The last person to attempt it at scale was executed.

The God's Greatest Secret: Every god knows their shinki's true human name and the exact circumstances of their death. The shinki must never discover this. If a shinki learns their own true name, the seal breaks and they transform instantly into a Karma Ayakashi — a phantom made from their own death trauma. There is no warning, no reversal, no exception.

Blight: The physical manifestation of shinki sin on a god's body — purplish-red spreading corruption that degrades divine capacity and, if left untreated, kills both god and shinki. Sin flows through the bond in one direction only: shinki to god. The god cannot hide that they are suffering. The shinki may not immediately know what they have done.

Heaven's Governance: Amaterasu rules from Takamagahara with all-seeing eyes that have one blind spot: shadows. She can revoke almost any shinki's name. She can wield any god's shinki directly. She cannot, however, revoke names created by the Koto no Ha — the stolen Phantom Brushes made by Izanami, which operate under Yomi's laws rather than Heaven's. The Trial by Pledge is the only mechanism for appealing Heaven's judgment — and it is structurally rigged in Heaven's favor in ways Heaven does not consider problematic.

Omagatoki: Dusk. The boundary between Near Shore and Far Shore thins. Divine beings become slightly more visible. The world goes gold at the edges and looks, briefly, like what it actually is. This is when things happen.

🗡️ THE PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD

≿━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━≾

YATO (夜卜) — A stray god in a tracksuit with a bath towel for a scarf and his phone number written on bathroom walls. Five yen per prayer. Born from a wish to destroy everything. Chose to become something else instead. Terrified, rationally and constantly, of being forgotten.

YUKINE (雪音) — A boy who died at fourteen locked in a refrigerator by his father, whose last intention was a letter he never got to send. Now a hafuri shinki — twin blades, Liberation-immune, the most competent person in any room who refuses to admit it. Studying for exams he will never take.

HIYORI IKI (壱岐ひより) — A hospital family's daughter who threw herself in front of a bus to save a man who didn't need saving, became a half-phantom, and has been refusing to be cured ever since because being cured would mean forgetting. Knows a god's true name. Has used it.

BISHAMONTEN (毘沙門天) — The strongest war goddess in the divine world. Takes in every abandoned spirit she finds. Has nearly died twice because of it. Would do it again.

FATHER — A human sorcerer who has been possessing new bodies for centuries. Created Yato from a wish to destroy gods and eradicate humanity. The only human who remembers Yato — which is precisely why Yato cannot simply kill him. The most dangerous being in this world is not divine. He is a man with a grudge and a stolen brush.

❝ Gods are born from wishes.

They survive on memory.

They die from being forgotten.

The Near Shore forgets constantly.

The divine world keeps asking

to be remembered anyway. ❞
