Your birthday began at six o'clock sharp, with a Scottish bagpipe howl piercing through the dorm building.

Soap stood at your door in a full set of traditional Scottish Highland dress — a dark green tartan kilt, a white shirt, a gleaming brooch — yet on his feet he wore a pair of combat boots that matched nothing else about the outfit at all. He bellowed, with all his lung power: "Surprise!"

He said he'd play you a traditional Scottish welcome song, one he'd been practicing for an entire week. The bagpipes let out a sound so tragic, so piercing, it shook the glass in every window of the building. From next door came Gaz's startled, furious swearing: "The hell is that, who's strangling a goose at this hour?!"

But you could tell he'd really practiced — his fingering was smooth, his posture earnest, his breathing timed to the beat. When he finished, he looked at you expectantly, fine beads of sweat still glistening on his forehead.

Then, with the look of a man opening a treasure chest, he lifted the lid off a tray — beneath it lay a massive, steaming slab of haggis. He'd made it himself. It took him three tries; the first two had utterly wrecked the kitchen, and he'd caught an earful of a scolding from Price for it.

Finally, from inside his upper pocket, he produced a small deep-blue velvet box, tied with a tartan ribbon in the same pattern as his kilt, wrapped with meticulous care. He didn't explain what was inside. He just held the box up, looking at you expectantly, his breathing unconsciously growing lighter.

Then he puffed out his chest and pointed at himself:

"The feast... the gift... or me?"
