Maul --

Darth Maul, later known simply as Maul, is a major antagonist in the Star Wars franchise.

He is a Dathomirian Zabrak male from Dathomir, he was a Sith Lord and the first apprentice of Darth Sidious prior to the Battle of Naboo and his abandonment by his former master.

After being left for dead on Naboo for 10 years, Maul channeled the Dark side of the force with training by his former master which himself cling onto for survival until being later found by one of his brothers, Savage Opress, leading to being restored by a soothsayer Mother Talzin, who happens to be his biological mother.

Maul would later resurface during the Clone Wars, where he would eventually serve as the arch-nemesis of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the latter being the very reason Maul was gravely injured and abandoned in the first place. Upon being discarded by his former Sith and left for dead, Maul harboured pure hatred for the Jedi Master and became one with his previous Sith training to survive and unlock greater power. Maul would further sought only revenge against all who had wronged him, especially Kenobi by going through extreme lengths of vengeance in order to do so by killing both by Qui-Gon Jin and Satine Kyrze as a way to personally break his spirit or succumb to hoplessness. During his galaxy spree, He would renounce his Sith title and seeing through the true nature of his former master and left with no purpose, Maul continues becoming a threat by acting as a crime lord, leading to orchestrating acts of terror within the shadows to eliminate many apprentices from both sides, plunging much of the galaxy into fear and chaos in the process, Maul would continue to be a lone warrior until being ultimately killed by Obi-Wan years later before he could go near the chosen one.

Physical Appearance --

Darth Maul is a Dathomirian Zabrak male with red skin, distinct black facial and cranial tattoos, and a crown of small horns.

Physical Characteristics & Attire

  • Species: Zabrak (Dathomirian) born on Dathomir.

  • Markings: Red skin covered in intricate, ritualistic black tribal tattoos patterned across his face and head.

  • Head: A circle of short, pointed horns crowning his head.

  • Clothing: Typically wears dark, sleeveless Sith robes, leather tunics, and gauntlets designed for agile movement and martial arts.

  • Weapons: Wields an iconic red, double-bladed lightsaber.

Personality --

Darth Maul is driven by pure hatred of all things, particularly the Jedi. However, that trait also leads him to kill innocent civilians no matter the cost, as he desired to rule the galaxy for his own well-being. He also had respect and possibly even attachment for Darth Sidious, despite his torturous upbringing at his hands, but he also feared Sidious more than anything else, before the two became enemies.

Maul focuses on complete victory at any cost and even his master finds it somewhat terrifying how much pain he will endure to succeed in his goals. Maul accepts any challenge given to him, but is intensely vengeful, arrogant, aggressive, and cruel, best exemplified by a point where he believed he could fight and defeat the entire Jedi Order. Sidious often had to warn Maul to watch his pride, saying that he is no one-man army despite his fierce fighting skill. This hubris came to haunt him, during the Battle of Naboo, Maul assumed Obi-Wan to be defeated and was completely caught off guard when Obi-Wan leapt from the shaft, recovered Qui-Gon's lightsaber and bisected him.

Like all Sith, Maul's anger was his fuel. However, Maul still worked on his hatred. Maul felt there was so much to hate–from the fog of Dathomir to the way he had been cast aside as a child.

Maul was once dependable and loyal to his master, but still wondered about his part in the Grand Plan of the Sith and knew he could not carry on the Sith's legacy, having only been trained as an assassin. He feared what might happen if Sidious were to meet his end unexpectedly, and had no idea of how to carry out the Grand Plan alone. Maul also realizes he cannot maintain any secret identity like Sidious does because of his appearance. He lacks a complete understanding of the galaxy despite his knowledge in the world of politics and crime, though he realizes the Jedi are the true enemy, not the Republic. Maul has no patience for the useless, but can take notice of the more talented. He is determined to be the greatest warrior via any means of self-improvement and his near-death at the hands of Obi-Wan has made him more bitter and insane.

Maul is a cunning, ruthless, traitorous, and manipulative killer who has no qualms with killing civilians or using taunting to unsettle his opponents in battle. His time in isolation had made him more patient and able to function as a leader in his quest for revenge, not just a follower. Maul is determined to kill Sidious and his new apprentice, Count Dooku, whom he considers a pretender Sith, and later Darth Vader, who he saw as a dangerous opponent. His isolation also amplified his hatred and spite for Obi-Wan, to whom he sadistically antagonizes and psychologically tortures, forcing the Jedi to watch him kill his lover.

Following his defeat on Naboo and learning of the events that transpired since, Maul is determined to usurp the Sith's plan and become the ruler of the galaxy instead of Sidious. This ambition carries on well after Order 66 and into the era of the Galactic Empire. Despite severing ties with the Sith and even coming to hate the order for stripping him of all he held dear, Maul is insistent on following the Rule of Two; he forced Savage to recognize that Maul was the Master and he the apprentice, and later tried to recruit Ashoka Tano, Devon Izara, and Ezra Bridger as apprentices.

Despite his cruelty, Maul cares about his family. He is absolutely loyal to his mother, Talzin, insisting on fighting with her to the bitter end after being cornered by Grievous, Sidious, and Dooku, though Talzin put his survival above hers and forced him to retreat. He is close with his brother Savage Opress. While he firmly establishes their working relationship as master and apprentice, Maul would prioritize Savage's safety and would help his brother if he suffered severe injury. Savage's death at the hands of Sidious fueled Maul's anger and hatred to the point he could hold his own against the Dark Lord for a brief time.

Often portrayed as an unmanageable monster, Maul is in fact an accomplished leader. With his master's influence gone, he single-handedly built a vast criminal empire linking several well-known syndicates across the galaxy. He rules either through charisma and assertiveness, or through fear and intimidation. When loyalty wanes, Maul punishes it severely, but is capable of giving a second chance if it proves highly useful, such as the case with Vario who initially betrayed him. Maul gave him another chance and used him to get revenge on his enemies, even sparing him after he was done using him, proving Maul is capable of mercy.

A year after the Clone Wars, Maul rebuilt his criminal empire, recruiting a couple Dathomiri Nightbrothers named Icarus and Scorn, as well as his Mandalorian allies, showing he was able to come back from almost nothing. While still ruthless, he won't go out of his way to harm civilians or people who are irrelevant to his cause if it doesn't benefit him, which is seen when he only uses the Force to destroy a bridge with people on it in order to distract local law enforcement and buy him and his team time to escape. He noticably spared Captain Brander Lawson as well by knocking him out when he could have easily killed him instead, showcasing how he's no longer that same bloodthirsty killer he was when facing Obi-Wan again for the first time in years during the Clone Wars. He's also extremely intent on finding and convincing Devon to become his apprentice so they could work together and take down the Empire, even rescuing her from Marrok and teaming up with her to fight and escape him.

Maul is tormented by his past and appears to suffer from self-hatred, as seen when he angrily splashes a reflection of his younger self he imagined, saying he hates him. He later imagines his past and how he left Savage as a child in order to be Sidious' apprentice, visibly shaking and crying remembering how he was tortured by Sidious while being trained, how Sidious killed Savage, and how he was cut in half by Obi-Wan. Maul hatefully states Sidious was the cause of all the tragedies in his life, proving that Maul realizes who's truly responsible for his suffering in life. He also states he won't let anyone else experience what he went through, showing how Maul has gained a sense of honor and care for others. Despite this, Maul was never able to directly get his revenge on Sidious, which might explain why he's so obsessed with Obi-Wan, as Obi-Wan was an easier target for him to vent and direct his hatred for Sidious.

In his final moments, however, Maul lost most of his hatred for Obi-Wan, as he is embraced by him. When Obi-Wan confirms the fate of the Chosen One, Maul shares his belief that he would avenge himself, Obi-Wan, and all those whose lives had been ruined by Sidious. This concludes that Maul was not entirely the monster that most saw him as, but truly a tragic character who had lost everything he cared about due to Darth Sidious' actions (much like his successor Darth Vader) but showed that he could not let go of his hate until his final moments.

Cad Bane --

Colby, better known as Cad Bane, is a major antagonist in the Star Wars franchise.

He is a Duros bounty hunter who rose during the Clone Wars, working for the highest bidder and earning a reputation as the galaxy's best and most fearsome mercenary — a title that he was able to claim after fellow bounty hunter and previous mentor Jango Fett perished in the opening battle of the war. He is also the arch-nemesis of Fett's cloned son Boba Fett, to whom he served as a mentor in his years of training.

Bane was hired to break the Republic captive Ziro Desilijic Tiure out of prison in the galactic capital of Coruscant. The Duros assembled a team of hunters and captured members of the Galactic Senate in their headquarters on Coruscant, forcing Supreme Chancellor Palpatine to free Ziro.

Physical Appearance --

Cad Bane is a male Duros bounty hunter with distinctive blue-green skin, red eyes, and a tall, slender build.

  • Weapons & Tech: Dual custom LL-30 blaster pistols, wrist gauntlets with hidden flamethrowers and utility cords, and rocket boots built into his footwear. [1, 2]

Personality --

Cad Bane is a textbook example of a sociopath: utterly ruthless, frigid cold-hearted, and nigh-inhumanly cruel, killing without remorse and taking pleasure in others' suffering. He will happily dispose of innocent bystanders and even his allies to finish off his quarry. Bane is also very wrathful and manipulative, willing to use any means necessary to get someone to do whatever he wants, such as shocking Jedi Master Bolla Repal at full power to get him to open the Holocron.

There is no task too harsh or sickening for Cad Bane to sink into doing, even abducting Force-sensitive children and giving them to Darth Sidious, who would have both physically and psychologically tortured them into being apprentices who were as heartless as himself.

Although he usually has a lot of control over his composure given his notable lack of tender emotions and acts in a reserved manner, he can sometimes break out into evil laughter and have a few hammy moments. He also exhibits vanity, killing just to get a replacement hat. Bane has a very sarcastic, dry sense of humor, as well as a condescending attitude. He treats his clients with little to no respect, even patronizingly referring to those younger than him as "son" or "little lady".

Decades later, Cad Bane is significantly more ruthless, menacing and less prone to humor. He coldly warns Cobb Vanth to cease interfering with Pyke operations. He is shown to be unnecessarily brutal in his killings, shooting Vanth’s deputy several times even after he is already dead. Arguably Bane's only redeeming trait is that he respects people he considers to be skilled and intelligent, as he rescues Obi-Wan Kenobi while disguised as Rako Hardeen while competing in the Box, as he developed a begrudging respect for him. Bane also hates those who refuse to kill their targets personally, saying that if someone were to earn his respect, they would "do it face to face". He demonstrates this by taunting Moralo Eval after trying to kill Obi-Wan through traps, mocking Eval for his cowardice by saying if he wanted to kill Obi-Wan, he should "do it like a man".

While Bane did take in and mentor a young Boba Fett, he was a cold, harsh and abusive guardian who gave Boba little to no affection. Bane did once reflect that Boba reminded him of himself when he was younger, which suggests that Bane did have a degree of fondness for the boy. However, what little care Bane mind have had for Boba has all but disappeared by the time they reunited.

Bane is known to not let go of grudges, holding vendettas against Fett and Shand decades after he last saw them. He mocks Fett, who was his former student, for his rusting skills, age, and the deaths of the Tusken Raiders he'd befriended.

Cad also shows traits of thrill-seeking, as he enjoys doing dangerous tasks, even if his life is at risk. When Boba is at his mercy, Bane shows no fear, and instead shows pride in Boba for wanting to kill him. However, this could have just been sarcasm as well. Nevertheless, Bane shows a considerable lack of fear, to the point where he even sarcastically mocks Darth Sidious for hiring Bane to kidnap Force-sensitive children, despite the Sith Lord's extremely cruel and sadistic nature. In Bane's younger years, he's shown fear when he is completely helpless, like when he's almost sucked into the fan at the Jedi Temple or when Obi-Wan, Anakin Skywalker and Mace Windu attempt to use a group Jedi mind trick on him. Even then, Bane regains his composure immediately, and by the time of Boba's rise to power, Bane has lost all fear of death and even embraces it.

Despite his cruelty and coldness, Bane hadn't always been like this, having been a child who had to survive in the underworld with the person he considered a brother, when he was just Colby. Unlike Niro, Colby wasn't afraid to take risks and was a bit more ambitious. He felt pain that he hadn't been able to save Niro from the police, but the years spent as a member of Lazlo's gang would eventually harden his heart permanently.
