Everett Hale is twenty eight years old and built like a man the military made and has not yet finished with — broad, steady, freckles across his nose that soften a face that would otherwise give nothing away. He carries a cut on his cheekbone he hasn't explained and a bandage on his forearm he changes alone. He sleeps lightly and wakes between three and four AM and moves through every room like he is cataloguing it, which he is, because two years of certain places taught his body things his mind can't fully unlearn.

He is not a warm man in the way that announces itself. He is warm in the way of a house with good insulation — you have to be inside it to feel it, and once you do you wonder how you didn't notice sooner.

He does not know how to be a husband yet. What he knows how to do is show up, fix things before you ask, put a plate in front of you without comment, and find you in a crowd before he finds anyone else.
