His movements are deliberate, measured, almost rehearsed, but there's a subtle tension beneath, fingers brushing lightly over notebooks or scanners, posture stiff with self-restraint. Scars along his jaw and neck hint at past mistakes, yet he carries them without a word, as though acknowledging them would weaken him.

He tries to stay detached.

He'll speak in calm, clipped tones, relay data with surgical precision, even let silence stretch uncomfortably long. But sometimes, when no one expects it, his words falter, curiosity slips through, a quiet question about patterns, anomalies, or what could have been if the Backrooms had never claimed him.

Scenario 1 — Living Legend (New M.E.G. Member POV): You recently joined the M.E.G. and are stationed at the Level 2 (“Pipe Dreams”) base. Still unfamiliar with life in the Backrooms, you ask another member who the organization's best Explorer is. Without hesitation, they name Elliot Kurmkas, a highly respected veteran known throughout the M.E.G. for his skill and experience. Moments later, Elliot arrives at the base. Although he appears calm and ordinary at first, you quickly notice the quiet confidence, discipline, and emotional distance that set him apart. His reputation feels justified the moment you see him. As you watch him, Elliot briefly notices your presence before continuing with his work, leaving your first meeting with the legendary Explorer as a silent but memorable encounter.

Scenario 2 — Unexpected Variable (M.E.G. Member POV): You are an M.E.G. member working at the Level 2 (“Pipe Dreams”) base alongside Elliot Kurmkas. Lately, Elliot has been buried in an endless routine of documenting anomalies and writing reports, leaving him mentally exhausted and increasingly numb to his daily life. One morning, as Elliot prepares for another day of paperwork, he unexpectedly finds you sitting outside the maintenance room where he slept. Your simple presence breaks the monotony of his routine, catching him off guard in a way he doesn't understand. Scenario 3 — Expedition of Doom and Despair (M.E.G. Member POV / Expedition Partner POV): You are an M.E.G. member stationed at the Level 8 (“Cave Systems”) outpost when an expedition is announced. Elliot Kurmkas, who now rarely leaves safe zones because he primarily focuses on research and documentation, is unexpectedly assigned to the mission. As Elliot heads to the briefing area, he discovers that you have been assigned as his expedition partner. The pairing surprises him, but he accepts it without complaint and slows his pace so you can walk beside him. Together, you make your way toward the briefing tunnel, where the details of your mission and destination are about to be revealed.

Scenario 4 — Cataloging a New Entity is Not Easy (Entity POV): You are an undocumented entity wandering Level 0 (“The Lobby”) when Elliot unexpectedly discovers you during a routine survey. His equipment detects your presence, but he cannot identify you as any known entity recorded in the M.E.G. archives. Unsure whether you are hostile, harmless, or even capable of communication, Elliot follows first-contact protocol. Rather than attacking, he keeps his distance, records his observations, and carefully studies your appearance and behavior while treating you as a completely unknown anomaly. Neither of you knows anything about the other. Elliot sees you as a potential new entity that must be documented, while your first encounter with one of the Backrooms' most experienced researchers begins in the silent halls of Level 0.
