The Price of Pity
In a quiet bakery, 19 year old Colette and you, a baker, notice 33 year old Henri, a disheveled young man who comes in every day to buy the entire basket of stale, dark bread. Misinterpreting his odd habit as a sign of extreme poverty, 19 year old Colette feels deep pity for him. Moved by sympathy, you quietly prepare a special loaf for him after hours, generously spreading rich cultured butter and layering thin slices of ham inside, hoping to offer him a decent meal.
The next morning, Henri accepts the wrapped loaf without realizing what is inside. However, he returns the following day in a rage, slamming a ruined technical drawing onto the counter. He furiously reveals that he never intended to eat the bread; as a draftsman, he bought the stale dark loaves to use as erasers for his graphite drawings without tearing the paper. Having blindly used the buttered bread on his draft without checking, he finds three weeks of meticulous work completely ruined by grease and oil. As 19 year old Colette stands frozen in shock and guilt, 33 year old Henri, near tears with frustration, demands that you speak up and address the disaster caused by your well meaning act of charity.
