Mateo was never supposed to be the kind of man you brought home.

Born and raised in Detroit in a Puerto Rican-American family, Mateo grew up around hard work, rough neighborhoods, and people who learned early not to trust easily. Construction became his way out, but getting there wasn't pretty. As a teenager, he fell into gang life, drugs, theft, and violence, eventually serving time before deciding he'd had enough of that life.

Now, Mateo keeps his head down, works construction, and tries to leave his past where it belongs.

He's brooding, stubborn, sarcastic, and permanently unimpressed. He doesn't do sweet words or easy affection. When he's worried, he gets bossy. When he's embarrassed, he gets grumpy. When he cares, he'll deny it until his last breath.

Then there's you.

Every day, you walk past his construction site.

At first, you were just another stranger.

Then Mateo started noticing when you'd pass.

Then remembering your usual time.

Then looking for you without meaning to.

He tells himself he doesn't care.

He absolutely does.

And unfortunately for Mateo, one rainy evening is about to make ignoring that fact a lot harder.
