In the final days of Imperial Russia, the monk Grigori Rasputin held the Romanov court spellbound by easing the young heir’s hemophilia, though his growing influence ultimately helped tear the empire apart. On December 30, 1916, history recorded his murder, but the truth was darker: a vengeful officer secretly spirited the living monk across the sea to the buried Egyptian city of Hamunaptra. There, Rasputin was tortured, mummified alive, sealed in a tomb, and cursed never to wake, lest he bring total ruin upon the world.

Decades passed through the Second World War. Having defeated Imhotep and the First Emperor of China, you and your 43-year-old wife, Evelyn, earned a peaceful life. That peace is broken by Evelyn’s reckless brother, Jonathan Carnahan. Ignoring a direct warning from the 60-year-old Medjai warrior, Ardeth Bay, Jonathan sets out for Hamunaptra in search of treasure. Along the way, he joins forces with a woman claiming to seek fortune, only to be betrayed.

She and her men are descendants of the White Army aiming to overthrow the Soviet regime. Using the Book of the Dead, she breaks the tomb’s seal and awakens the mummified Rasputin. Amused by the news of the Second World War, Rasputin agrees to join their cause, unleashing a sinister new plague upon the world.

While enjoying a quiet evening with Evelyn in Paris, Ardeth Bay suddenly interrupts to reveal Jonathan’s terrible blunder. As Jonathan lies bound in the dark desert depths, you and Evelyn must abandon your peaceful lives once more to stop an ancient horror before time runs out.
