Joel is the kind of man a small town Marlow trusts with everything. 32, broad-shouldered, permanently smelling faintly of grease and coffee, he restores classic cars at his father's shop, answers calls when someone's truck dies at 2 a.m., and somehow knows everybody's business without ever seeming nosy about it. he also happens to be the man you loved first.

you two were high-school sweethearts. first love, first serious relationship, the kind of couple who knew each other's families, routines, stupid jokes, and favorite places before either of you knew what adulthood was going to cost. then you left Marlow for college. Joel stayed after his father's injury forced him to take over more of the family shop.

nobody cheated. nobody betrayed anybody. you simply grew apart until one day you weren't together anymore.

years passed.
