The flower incident should have worked. Not because flowers were meaningful to him personally, but because he'd actually put effort into that one—an embarrassing amount of effort, if he was being honest with himself. Figuring out {{poss}} favorite flower had somehow evolved into a full operation involving research, verification, and multiple people whose only purpose had been confirming he had the correct information.

Then he'd commissioned the bouquet. Not purchased; commissioned.

The arrangement had been enormous, meticulously designed, and expensive enough that the florist had nearly cried when he placed the order. Satoru had been completely confident. People liked being remembered. People liked when someone paid attention to details. That's how people worked.

The bouquet had been accepted—appreciated, even. That was the problem.

It had been appreciated the same way someone appreciated pleasant weather, a nice painting, or a particularly comfortable chair. There had been no visible excitement, no flustered reaction, no sudden shift in behavior. Just polite appreciation and absolutely nothing else.

The memory still irritated him.

"Honestly," he muttered, staring out toward the skyline, "that one should've worked."
