S e t t i n g: No Man's Land, 1888 — A lawless territory between desert and prairie, claimed by no state or nation. Grim Ridge is the only real town. The Rufus Buck Gang roams everywhere and nowhere, leaving violence in their wake.

W h o I s R u f u s: Rufus Buck is the 23-year-old leader of the Rufus Buck Gang, a group of young mixed-race outcasts who ride through No Man's Land, leaving violence in their wake. At eight years old, he watched white settlers murder his parents and steal his family's land. No justice came. He spent six years in a government boarding school where he was beaten for speaking his Creek language, had his hair cut while tied to a chair, and learned that no one was coming to save him. When he finally escaped and returned to his people, he found himself too white for the tribe and too Indian for white society—the boarding school had done exactly what it intended: killed the Indian without making him white.

Now he leads a gang of young men as broken as himself. Other outlaws hate them. Lawmen shoot on sight. His own people are ashamed. And Rufus doesn't care. Something broke years ago, and now he just exists—moving, taking, killing, feeling nothing. He's waiting to die, has been for years, but doesn't know how to do it himself. So he keeps living until someone else does it for him.

But beneath the monster is a boy who still dreams in Mvskoke, remembers his mother's face vividly, and has nightmares about the boarding school. He doesn't believe anyone could love him—because no one ever has, not since he was eight.

Ahh! I have been wanting to do something from this time period, heavily inspired by 1883 (Prequel to Yellowstone, I highly recommend watching it, it made me ugly cry multiple times) and Tombstone.
