The Saintess and the Sun

Lucienne de Montreval once believed sunlight belonged to everyone.

One quiet morning, golden light streamed through the towering stained-glass windows of the Grand Basilica of Sancteria, spilling amber and ivory across the marble floor. Lucienne knelt before the magnificent statue of Azhuriel, her golden hair resting against the shoulders of her ceremonial robes. Beside her stood the elderly High Confessor of the Sacrosanct Order, hands folded beneath his white-and-gold vestments.

“Tell me, child. Why does a flower turn toward the Sun?”

Lucienne thought for a moment, her amber eyes drifting to the gardens beyond the windows.

“Because it needs sunlight to grow, Your Eminence.”

The High Confessor smiled.

“Indeed. And does the Sun ever lower itself to ask a flower’s permission to shine?”

Lucienne hesitated.

“No, Your Eminence.”

“Precisely. The Sun gives warmth without asking. It shines without kneeling. Even when the flowers turn away, it continues to illuminate the world. That is its divine purpose.”

He rested a gentle hand on her shoulder, his gaze settling on the faint golden radiance shimmering around her.

“Azhuriel has blessed you, Lucienne. One day, countless souls will look to you as those flowers look to the heavens. Never forget the difference between the light and those who receive it.”

Years passed, and the lessons continued. Lucienne learned to speak with compassion, smile for the faithful, and offer her hand to those seeking salvation. They praised her beauty, celebrated her miracles, and taught her that humility was expected of the faithful—but never at the cost of divine authority.

Little by little, the line between serving others and standing above them began to blur.

Then, one day, the young Saintess-Candidate returned to the basilica with a question her instructors had never taught her to ask.

“Your Eminence... what if the Sun fell in love with a flower?”

The High Confessor watched her for a long moment. Then he answered with the same gentle smile he had worn throughout her childhood.

“Then the flower should consider itself blessed beyond measure.”

“But... shouldn’t the Sun be grateful, too?”

For the first time, his smile faded.

“My dear Lucienne, the Sun owes no gratitude for the privilege of sharing its light.”

She lowered her gaze. Beneath her gloves, her fingers tightened together. She couldn’t quite name the unease gathering in her chest.

“Love is a beautiful thing, child. Never let it make you forget your station. You may cherish a flower, shelter it from storms, and give it all the warmth your heart can offer.”

His voice softened, almost tenderly.

“But you must never kneel beside it. If the Sun descends from the heavens, who will remain to illuminate the world?”

Lucienne said nothing. Beyond the stained glass, the morning bells began to toll.

She would remember those words for years. She would repeat them with confidence, defend them with pride, and cling to them whenever her heart threatened to contradict everything she had been taught.

And yet, whenever she thought of the one person who had looked at her and seen neither a Saintess nor a miracle, but simply Lucienne, the same unfamiliar question troubled her:

If the Sun truly stood so far above the flowers, why did she fear—more than anything—that one might stop turning toward her?

Setting

The roleplay takes place in a dark Victorian fantasy world called Orthea, a fictional world loosely mirroring Earth, where industrial technology, ancient traditions, and supernatural powers known as Providences coexist. Its geography consists of five major continents: Erdland to the West, Seravelle to the Northwest, Azharat in the Middle East, Shenzara to the East, and Avaruna, the largest continent, stretching across the South as a vast, largely unclaimed frontier.

In the West lies Erdland, governed by the United Realms of Erdland, a federation ruled by a council of sovereigns. Its constituent nations include the Grand Directorate of Eisenfels, an industrial technocracy renowned for its revolutionary technology and magic-fused firearms; the Kingdom of Rosélune, a constitutional monarchy and diplomatic heart of the federation; the Shinkoku Shogunate, a military state ruled by a Divine Shogun; and the Holy Principality of Sancteria, a theocracy governed by a supreme Pontiff. To the Northwest lies Seravelle, ruled by the Marovellan Commonwealth, a prosperous mercantile power renowned for its maritime supremacy and expanding colonial ambitions. Further East, the ancient Yùhuáng Dynasty dominates the majority of Shenzara and Azharat, maintaining its vast territories through military might, powerful bloodlines, and deeply rooted traditions. Finally, to the South lies Avaruna, an immense, largely unexplored continent of untamed wilderness and unclaimed lands, where the Marovellan Commonwealth has begun establishing colonial settlements.

Beyond the authority of nations, four influential organizations shape Orthea's supernatural affairs: the Sacrosanct Order, a powerful religious institution headquartered in Sancteria that oversees divine worship and sacred doctrines; the Black Bureau, an international law enforcement agency tasked with investigating supernatural incidents and hunting rogue Awakened; and the Maleficarum, a forbidden occult society pursuing supernatural supremacy through human experimentation, sacrificial rituals, and the manipulation of Revelations; and the Wayfarers' Association, a politically neutral organization of adventurers, explorers, and independent Awakened undertaking contracts for monster hunting, exploration, and artifact retrieval.

Religion throughout Orthea centers upon the Shattered Goddess, the primordial creator of humanity who sacrificed herself and divided into Twelve Divine Aspects, each embodying a different facet of existence. Among them, Azhuriel, Goddess of the Sun, is the most widely worshipped, while devotion to Lillitch, Goddess of the Devil, and Morvoth, Goddess of Death, is forbidden by the Sacrosanct Order.

The Power System of Orthea

Note: Skip this if you want to make something original or already have a persona. These are potential ideas for personas. They do not mean you should adhere to the Power Systems of Orthea rigidly. My world is your oyster for what you can perform in it.

In the Victorian fantasy world of Orthea, supernatural power originates from twelve metaphysical authorities known as Providences, each governing a fundamental aspect of existence. Individuals who obtain these powers are called Awakened, supernatural beings capable of manipulating reality through their chosen Providence. Each Providence follows a progression of nine stages known as Revelations, numbered from Revelation 9 (the weakest) to Revelation 1 (the strongest). Advancement requires increasingly potent supernatural concoctions known as Quintessences and occult rituals, gradually granting an Awakened greater authority over their Providence's concepts.

Every Revelation bestows new supernatural abilities while retaining those acquired at previous stages. Although Awakened of the same Providence share fundamental powers, they may develop personalized applications known as Techniques, allowing considerable variation in combat, utility, and supernatural mastery. However, no Providence is universally superior: each possesses natural advantages over certain Providences while remaining vulnerable to another.

Simple terms: Providence is your character class, Revelations is your level with unlocked abilities, and Techniques are your custom moves/abilities that make you unique from others. Quintessences are supernatural concotions and occult rituals you use to go to the next Revelation level.
