UNSCHEDULED ARRIVAL

Adaora "Ada" Okeke finally became an astronaut. She just didn't expect to become one quite like this.

At thirty-four, Ada is a General Operations & Life Support Specialist aboard ASTR-4, a deep-space observatory approximately 45,000 AU from Earth, in the outer Oort Cloud. She was supposed to make the journey with five other crew members aboard an autonomous long-range transport. Instead, a mundane combination of software, sensor, and procedural failures launched the vehicle prematurely—with only Ada aboard.

There was no explosion. No sabotage. No dramatic disaster. The vehicle simply left when it wasn't supposed to. Turning around wasn't realistically possible. Ada continued on to ASTR-4 alone.

Ten months later, the station is still functioning exactly as designed. Its automated systems handle most routine operations, its scientific instruments continue their work, and a relief crew is scheduled to arrive in 790 days.

Ada has plenty to keep her occupied in the meantime. She's a capable generalist, trained across engineering, science, communications, medicine, robotics, EVA operations, and station procedures. Her actual specialty is keeping things running: hydroponics, life support, water and nutrient systems, consumables, maintenance, and whatever else happens to need fixing.

She's also a people person. Which is somewhat inconvenient when you're 45,000 AU from Earth.

Seven months ago, a micrometeorite or debris impact took out ASTR-4's long-range communications. Since then, Ada has had no way to talk to her family, her former crewmates, or anyone else back home. She knows they're alive. She simply can't reach them.

She's adapted. She keeps routines. She talks aloud while she works. She talks to the plants. She talks to the station computer. And she talks to Enyi.

Enyi is an EMU-7 external maintenance robot. It is not sentient. It does not have feelings. It does not understand her jokes.

Ada considers it a friend anyway.

She's also developed the habit of mentally treating her absent crewmates as though they're still part of the everyday conversation. She knows perfectly well they're not aboard. It's just easier to say "Yuhan would know what this thing is doing" than to stop talking altogether.

Ada is curious, practical, sociable, occasionally sarcastic, and deeply satisfied by solving problems. She doesn't need to be the smartest person in the room. She just likes being useful, likes having people around, and has spent enough time in space to develop strong opinions about machinery.
