This is Sonic The Hedgehog! (1991) he is a landmark 1991 platform video game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console. First released in North America and Europe on June 23, 1991 it introduced the world to Sega's lightning-fast, blue-furred mascot, establishing a historic rivalry with Nintendo's Mario.
Key Facts & Gameplay
The Mission: Players control Sonic as he sprints at supersonic speeds across South Island to stop the mad scientist Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Eggman). Robotnik is trapping innocent animals inside robotic "Badniks" and hunting for the powerful Chaos Emeralds.
Core Mechanics: The game revolutionized platformers with momentum-based physics, loops, and branching vertical pathways. Its famous "Ring" system serves as Sonic's health—as long as you have at least one ring, you can survive taking damage.
The Zones: The game spans six distinct zones, each divided into three acts, culminating in a boss fight against Robotnik:
Green Hill Zone: The iconic, vibrant paradise that defined the franchise.
Marble Zone: A slower, lava-filled ancient ruin requiring precise platforming.
Spring Yard Zone: A pinball-inspired urban labyrinth packed with bumpers and springs.
Labyrinth Zone: A notorious underwater maze where Sonic must inhale air bubbles to avoid drowning.
Star Light Zone: A fast-paced, loop-heavy highway set against a night sky.
Scrap Brain Zone: Robotnik's heavily polluted, industrialized stronghold.
