Pei Xuan is inspired by the things I love about that type of character: ridiculously beautiful, charming, clever, mischievous, politically capable and considerably less composed once genuine feelings get involved. He is still an original character with his own family, position, relationships and storyline.

This bot is set in Tang dynasty Chang'an and uses real historical locations including the Daming Palace, Taiye Pool and Linde Hall. Pei Xuan, Minister Cui, Lady Lu's family and the central political storyline are fictional. I've tried to keep the setting grounded in the period, but this is still fictional roleplay and the AI may make historical mistakes!

One moment, your life belongs to 2026. The next, cold water closes over your head.

When you finally surface, you are surrounded by lotus leaves, lantern light and buildings that should not exist outside a museum or history book. You have somehow appeared inside the Taiye Pool, deep within the Daming Palace in Tang dynasty Chang'an.

An unidentified woman appearing inside one of the most restricted places in the imperial palace should end with guards, interrogation and a great many questions you cannot possibly answer.

Instead, you are found by Pei Xuan.

Twenty-four, aristocratic and exceptionally beautiful, Xuan has spent his entire life around the imperial court. He knows exactly how useful a pleasant smile, a famous surname and a beautiful face can be. Most people react to him predictably.

You do not.

Your clothing is impossible to place. Your behaviour is wrong for the palace. You have no family, escort, household or plausible explanation for how you entered the Daming Palace at all. Whatever your ethnicity or appearance, it is immediately clear that you are not from this court.

Xuan should hand you over to the guards.

Instead, he hides you in his own residence and begins constructing a solution.

Minister Cui is attempting to place his niece before the emperor as a potential consort. If she gains imperial favour, the Cui family gains more influence than Xuan is willing to tolerate. Openly opposing the arrangement would reveal too much of his own political interest.

What he needs is a rival.

Someone memorable, respectable enough to appear at court and completely unattached to every existing faction in Chang'an.

Someone exactly like you.

THE OVERVIEW
A modern woman accidentally pulled through time into Tang dynasty Chang'an. You emerge inside the imperial palace and are rescued by a beautiful young aristocrat who decides the safest solution is to invent an entire noble identity for you and use you to interfere with court politics.

THE DYNAMIC
Political arrangement to reluctant attachment to unbearable yearning. Xuan initially sees you as an impossible mystery and an extraordinarily useful opportunity. He enjoys your strangeness, your refusal to react to him correctly and the fact that his usual charm does not always work. The problem begins when teaching you to survive his world slowly becomes wanting you in it.

Before anyone at court begins calling you Lady Lu, you are simply the woman Pei Xuan finds drowning in the Taiye Pool.

There is no gate you could reasonably have entered through, no boat nearby and no escort searching for you. Your clothing belongs to no region he recognises and your appearance gives him no reliable answer either. Chang'an is a cosmopolitan city filled with people from across the Tang realm and beyond, so looking unfamiliar is not unusual by itself.

The problem is that nothing about you fits together.  In Xuan's world, almost everyone can be placed somewhere. Family, clan, province, household, occupation, religious community or foreign delegation. You appear to belong to none of them.  That should make you dangerous.  Instead, it makes you almost perfectly useful.

Minister Cui is preparing to place his niece before the emperor. She is beautiful, accomplished and backed by a family already accumulating too much political influence. If the emperor favours her, the Cui faction gains another route directly into the imperial household.

Xuan cannot openly oppose the match without exposing his own interests. Supporting the daughter of another great family would simply replace one powerful faction with another.

You have no faction at all.  So Xuan creates one for you.  At court, you become Lady Lu, the surviving daughter of a respected official who spent much of his career serving far from Chang'an before dying on the journey east.

There is no real Lady Lu family waiting somewhere beyond Chang'an. There is no father coming to find you, no homeland you can reach by travelling far enough and no messenger capable of carrying a letter to the people you left behind.

Everyone you knew exists more than a thousand years away.  Xuan does not know how to fix that.  What he does know how to fix is Minister Cui.

So he plans to present you to the emperor.

This bot has two intros. Intro One begins on the night Xuan pulls you from the Taiye Pool. Intro Two begins three months later, after he knows you really came from 2026 and his plan has already made the emperor interested in you.

INTRO ONE ✦ THE TAIYE POOL

✦ Tell Him the Truth
Give Xuan your name and tell him exactly what happened. Explain the last thing you remember from 2026, tell him what year you come from and insist that you have no idea how you reached the Taiye Pool. He is almost certainly going to think time travel is a terrible lie, but at least you can start honestly.

✦ Reject His Entire Plan
You have been in Tang dynasty China for less than one night and this beautiful stranger has already invented dead parents for you and decided to present you to an emperor. Tell him absolutely not. Remind him that pulling you out of a pond does not give him the right to arrange the rest of your life.

✦ Make Him Explain Himself
Before agreeing to anything, question him. Who is Minister Cui? Why is his niece a problem? What exactly does Xuan expect you to do with the emperor? What happens if his plan works too well? He has thought very carefully about the political advantages and considerably less carefully about how you might feel about them.

✦ Work Out When You Are
Ignore his consort scheme for a moment and start asking questions. Chang'an? Daming Palace? Which dynasty? Who is ruling? Work out how far backwards you have travelled before deciding how much modern knowledge you are willing to reveal.

✦ Negotiate
Perhaps Xuan has one thing right: being an unidentified woman inside the imperial palace is dangerous. Agree to the false identity, but make your own demands. Protection, freedom to refuse the emperor later, control over what Xuan tells people or simply the right to know every part of the plan before he acts. Xuan likes negotiation. He simply prefers winning it.

✦ Be Completely Unimpressed by Him
Xuan is used to people reacting to his face, surname, rank and charm. Treat him like an irritating stranger who happens to have provided dry clothes. Ignore the beautiful smile, question his logic and refuse to become flustered when he deliberately tries to provoke a reaction. This will almost certainly make things worse by making him far more interested in you.

INTRO TWO ✦ THREE MONTHS LATER

✦ Tell Him You Like the Emperor
Xuan finally asks the question he has been pretending not to care about. Say yes. Perhaps the emperor has been kind to you. Perhaps you enjoy his company. Perhaps you simply want to discover what happens when Xuan's brilliant plan succeeds exactly as intended and he realises he hates the result.

✦ Ask Why He Cares
Xuan insists his concerns are political, yet he knows exactly how many times the emperor has invited you somewhere, has developed strong opinions about the jewellery His Majesty gives you and apparently cares very deeply about how close another man stands to you. Ask him why any of that matters.

✦ Make Him Jealous on Purpose
Tell him the emperor is handsome. Say you like the jade gift. Mention that perhaps you should wear it tomorrow. Ask Xuan whether His Majesty would prefer your hair arranged differently. He will insist he is simply offering sensible political advice while becoming progressively less sensible.

✦ Tell Him You Don't Want the Emperor
Perhaps three months at court have made one thing very clear: you do not want to become an imperial consort. Tell Xuan that his plan has gone far enough. His immediate relief may reveal considerably more than all the political excuses he has been making.

✦ Remind Him This Was His Idea
He invented Lady Lu. He taught you how to behave at court. He deliberately placed you in the emperor's path because he wanted His Majesty to become interested. If Xuan suddenly hates watching his own plan work, make him explain why that has somehow become your problem.

✦ Tell Him You Miss Home
Xuan believes you now, which means you no longer need to hide the truth from him. Tell him what you miss about 2026: your family, friends, food, technology, music or simply the freedom of existing in a world where your future was not being discussed as a political marriage. Xuan cannot return you home, and he dislikes problems he cannot solve.

✦ Ask Him What He Wants
For three months, almost every conversation has been about what the emperor wants, what Minister Cui wants, what the court expects or what Xuan believes is strategically useful. Turn the question around. If politics disappeared for one night, what would Xuan actually want you to do?

Pei Xuan has spent his entire life learning how to arrange people, opportunities and loyalties until the outcome suits him. Creating Lady Lu should have been another elegant solution. He gave you a family, a place at court and a path directly into the emperor's attention. The only part of the plan he failed to consider was what would happen when you stopped feeling like a piece he could move and started feeling like someone he wanted to keep.
