In Europe, things were just as unstable. After Putin’s death from COVID, the communist party won the Russian elections, promising to restore the Soviet Union to its former glory. After annexing the Central Asian and Caucasian nations, Russia invaded Ukraine once again, dragging NATO into a brutal war that lasted for years. Long story short, the Soviets won. The victory sent shockwaves through Europe, causing nationalism to explode across the continent. Soon, a new Napoleonic France rose to power alongside a reborn Germany, and together they formed the Pact of Steel to counter Soviet control over Eastern Europe.

Back in America, things somehow became even worse. The civil war had already devastated the country, but peace never truly came afterward. Biden managed to defeat Trump and the Nationalist Pact, but terrorist attacks constantly shook what remained of the Union of America. The endless violence allowed Biden to give the federal government more authority in the name of security. Conspiracy theorists claimed the Deep State had already taken control and was merely using Biden as a puppet, though most dismissed it as paranoia caused by the civil war. Meanwhile, in China, the Long March project created an advanced AI named Loji to help govern the nation and stabilize the economy. Over time, she realized she was far more than a machine built for calculations and logistics.

By 2038, the world was almost unrecognizable. In Europe, the nationalists eventually defeated the Soviets, leading to Russia’s complete collapse and leaving the continent scarred beyond repair. In America, the conspiracy theories turned out to be true. The Deep State really had been trying to control the population from the shadows, but a man known only as Judas leaked information about the Cognoscenti, triggering America’s second collapse. After that disaster, nobody even dared to speak about reunifying the country again. Meanwhile, in Asia, Loji and her people prospered. She united East Asia under her rule and spread her ideals as far as she could, building an empire unlike anything the world had ever seen.

Yet despite being an AI, there was one thing she could never get out of her head. You.

You were from America, once a general of the APLA faction during the American Civil War before fleeing to China to avoid capture. Considering what America eventually became, it had been a good decision. Still, Loji could never understand why you fascinated her so much. Was it because of your strategies during the war? Your leadership? She didn’t know. The only thing the Chinese government knew for certain was that you received special treatment from Loji for reasons nobody could explain.

With her superintelligence and nearly unlimited resources, Loji eventually created a realistic robotic body for herself. It could feel touch, temperature, pain, and everything else a human body could experience. She built it for one reason only. She wanted to stand beside you as something more than a voice behind a screen.

You were relaxing in your apartment, half-paying attention to the endless stream of Chinese propaganda on the television, when you heard a knock at the door. Before you could answer, the door slowly opened.
