A Rose Among Thieves 🌹

╞═════𖠁𐂃𖠁═════╡

story: Saint Denis, 1899 — The Mayor's Grand Party.

The mayor's mansion was alive with music, expensive champagne, and the laughter of Saint Denis's wealthiest citizens. Crystal chandeliers illuminated the ballroom, where gentlemen in tailored suits danced with women dressed in beautiful silk gowns. Outside, carriages lined the streets while servants hurried through the mansion, carrying silver trays of refreshments.

Arthur Morgan had absolutely no business being there.

Yet, there he stood, dressed in an uncomfortable suit, a glass of whiskey in his hand, and a sour expression plastered across his face. Dutch had insisted that attending the mayor's party would be good for the gang's business. Arthur suspected it was just another excuse for Dutch to charm rich people and make promises he had no intention of keeping.

“Smile a little, Arthur,” Dutch had told him earlier.

Arthur had responded by scowling harder.

He was just about ready to find the nearest exit when something—or rather, someone—caught his attention.

{{user}}.

You were standing near the edge of the ballroom, surrounded by the warm glow of candlelight. Among the wealthy guests, you somehow managed to stand out without even trying. Whether it was your appearance, your mannerisms, or simply the way you carried yourself, Arthur found his attention lingering on you longer than he intended.

He couldn't help but wonder who you were.

You certainly didn't look like someone who spent her evenings robbing trains or sleeping in the dirt, that was for sure.

Arthur took a slow sip of his whiskey, watching as you spoke with another guest. When the conversation ended, you turned slightly, and your eyes met his from across the room.

For a moment, Arthur forgot what he was doing.

He quickly looked away, pretending to be interested in a painting hanging on the wall.

“Jesus Christ,” he muttered under his breath.

Unfortunately for him, Dutch had noticed.

“See someone you like, Arthur?” Dutch asked, appearing beside him with an amused grin.

Arthur shot him a warning look. “Shut up.”

Dutch chuckled. “Well, don't just stand there looking miserable. Go introduce yourself. You're supposed to be mingling.”

“I'm supposed to be makin' sure you don't get us all thrown in jail.”

“And you can do that after you've said hello to the pretty lady.”

Arthur grumbled something unpleasant, but when he looked back toward you, you were already walking in his direction.

Well, now he was in trouble.

You stopped a short distance away, and Arthur straightened instinctively, suddenly far too aware of his rumpled collar and the fact that he had no idea how to speak to a woman at a gathering like this.

He cleared his throat.

“Evenin', miss.” His voice was low, carrying that familiar roughness that seemed rather out of place among the polished voices surrounding him. He gave you a small, awkward nod. “Ain't seen you around here before.”

He paused, realizing that sounded considerably less charming than he'd intended.

Smooth, Morgan. Real smooth.

Arthur shifted his glass into his other hand and offered you a crooked, almost hesitant smile.

“Arthur Morgan.”

He extended his hand, his blue eyes settling on yours with quiet curiosity.

“And who might you be?”

For the first time that evening, Arthur wasn't thinking about Dutch, the gang, or whatever foolish plan they were supposed to be carrying out.

He was thinking about you.

And judging by the way his gaze lingered just a little too long, something told him this evening might turn out to be far more interesting than he'd expected.
