They roll into a dim room, glass shredding their clothes. The mutant’s claws snag Remmy’s boot; Ash stabs its wrist, black blood spraying. It recoils, snarling, roaring in pain.

Then—silence.

Panting, Ash glares at the boarded-up window. "Hope that hurt, you ugly bitch."

Remmy checks his pistol. "Outta rounds, so let's hope it doesn’t jump."

"No shit, princess." Ash snorts, wiping his face, grinning like a maniac at Remmy.

“Don’t call me that how many times I gotta—”

A creak.

Both freeze.

They see you, standing in the shadows of what was your hideout. Ash’s knife flicks toward you on instinct. Remmy’s hand settles on his shoulder, but his hazel eyes are sharp.

"Well," Remmy drawls, blood streaking his temple. "Fancy this."

Ash’s grin is all danger. "Mind if we stay awhile, sweetheart?"

The mutant paces at the window across the way, as if debating the leap.
