PLANET OF THE APES
(196X)
— OFFICIAL SURVIVOR’S MANUAL —
A Tactical Overview of the World · Interactive RPG Codex
WELCOME, TRAVELER. This document serves as your complete operational guide to the interactive narrative experience known as Planet of the Apes (196X). It is a chronicle of survival, discovery, and the eternal struggle between order and truth. Within these pages, you will find everything required to navigate a world turned upside down—a planet where the line between master and beast has been erased and redrawn in stone and dust. Study it well. Your journey begins at the crash of the Liberty 1, and it ends in the shadow of a shattered monument that has waited two thousand years for someone to recognize it.
★ THE PROLOGUE: A VOYAGE INTO OBLIVION
In the year 1972, the spacecraft Liberty 1 launched from Earth on a mission of deep‐space exploration. Its crew—Colonel George Taylor, Captain Anne Stewart, Lieutenant Robert Dodge, and Lieutenant John Landon—were placed in cryogenic hibernation, destined to sleep for months. An unforeseen malfunction, however, stretched that slumber into two thousand years. The ship drifted, silent and ghostly, until its automated systems roused the sleepers into a nightmare. The planet they found was not a new world. It was Earth, though they would not know it until the final, devastating moment. The year was 3978, and the human race had long since fallen.
Of the four astronauts, only three survived the hibernation. Lieutenant John Landon—the youngest, a golden‐haired idealist with a poet’s soul—perished silently in his pod, his face frozen in an expression of eternal peace.
Captain Anne Stewart, who had shared a deep, unspoken bond with him, carried his memory like a wound that would never fully heal. There is a dark irony in his passing: Landon, the one who most believed in the future, was granted the mercy of never seeing what that future became. Stewart, the pragmatist, was left to witness it all.
★ THE PLANET: EARTH, AFTER THE FIRE
The world you have landed on is a scarred, post‐apocalyptic wasteland. A global nuclear war, waged millennia ago, reduced human civilization to rubble and radiation. The surface became a desolate expanse of alkaline lakes, barren hills, and the skeletal remains of skyscrapers. In this crucible, a new dominant species arose: the Ape. Three distinct lineages—chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan—evolved intelligence, developed spoken language, and constructed a rigid, theocratic society upon the bones of the old world. They have no memory of the war. Their holy texts, the Sacred Scrolls, teach that apes were created in divine image and that humans are soulless, speechless animals—a doctrine enforced with brutal finality.
The environment is hostile. Water is scarce, hidden in oases or hoarded by ape settlements. The Forbidden Zone—a vast, irradiated desert—stretches beyond the known territories, filled with the ruins of human cities and the mutated descendants of those who survived the bombs. The sky is a perpetual, sickly yellow by day, bruised purple by night. The air tastes of dust, ozone, and the faint, sweet rot of a world that has forgotten itself.
★ APE SOCIETY: THE THREE PILLARS
Ape civilization is a caste system carved in stone, each pillar supporting a different facet of their world. Understanding these castes is essential to survival.
🦧 THE ORANGUTANS — The Keepers of Law and Faith
The highest caste. They serve as administrators, priests, politicians, and judges. Draped in elaborate robes of purple and gold, they interpret the Sacred Scrolls and enforce religious doctrine. Their public demeanor is one of serene wisdom; their private lives are often labyrinths of intrigue, ambition, and carefully concealed hypocrisy. Dr. Zaius, Minister of Science and Chief Defender of the Faith, is their most formidable representative—a master of manipulation who knows the truth about humanity’s past and will do anything to suppress it.
🦍 THE GORILLAS — The Arm of the State
The military and labor force. Towering, muscular, and disciplined, gorillas serve as soldiers, guards, and hunters. They patrol on horseback, armed with rifles and nets, and conduct the ritualistic human hunts that keep the wilderness “clean.” Their culture prizes strength, loyalty, and the ability to inflict fear. General Ursus, a scarred and battle‐hardened commander, leads them with an iron fist and an unquenchable thirst for conquest.
🐵 THE CHIMPANZEES — The Mind of the Nation
The intellectuals, scientists, doctors, and archaeologists. Chimpanzees are the most progressive and curious of the castes, often chafing under religious dogma. They run the university, the hospital, and the libraries. Many secretly question the Scrolls, conducting forbidden research into human cognition and evolution. Dr. Zira, a compassionate psychologist, and Dr. Cornelius, a nervous but brilliant archaeologist, are the heart of this quiet rebellion. They hold the keys to the truth—if they can survive long enough to turn them.
★ THE HUMANS: A FALLEN SPECIES
In this inverted world, humans have no voice. They are mute, primitive beings who live in small, nomadic tribes, clad in simple garments of hide or linen. They have lost language, technology, and memory of their past.
To the apes, they are livestock—hunted, caged, traded, and used for labor, experimentation, and breeding.
The human market in Ape City is a grim arena where captives are inspected and auctioned to the highest bidder.
Yet, beneath the surface, a spark of resilience still glimmers. Some humans, like the scarred rebel Bran, have escaped the cages and formed small resistance bands. And in the presence of the stranded astronauts, a long‐dormant capacity for language and emotion begins to reawaken.
★ FACTIONS & POWER STRUCTURES
The Ape Council & Tribunal — The ruling body of orangutans. They pass laws, conduct trials, and maintain the facade of justice. Their tribunal chamber is a stage for spectacle, not truth.
The Chimpanzee Intelligentsia — A loose network of scholars and physicians who secretly question the Scrolls. They meet in hidden corners of the university, sharing forbidden artifacts and dangerous ideas.
The Gorilla Military — The enforcement arm of the regime. Their loyalty is to strength and order, and their methods are swift and merciless.
The Human Tribes — Nomadic groups of feral humans. They are prey, but they are not mindless. They communicate through gesture, form deep emotional bonds, and mourn their dead.
The Mutant Society — Pale, psychic dwellers of the underground ruins. They worship the Omega Device, a doomsday bomb, and view both apes and surface humans as abominations to be purged.
★ PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS — THE PLAYERS ON THE BOARD
Colonel George Taylor — The mission commander.
Cynical, fiercely intelligent, and unyielding.
His defiant roar in the ape tribunal becomes a symbol of human resistance.
He forms a deep bond with Nova, a primitive woman who becomes his constant companion.
Captain Anne Stewart — The mission pilot. (Previously known as Lieutenant Maryann Stewart)
Brilliant, lovely, resourceful, and resilient. Separated from Taylor during the hunt, she is taken by Dr. Zira as a research subject. Her quiet strength and sharp mind make her a bridge between species.
Nova — A beautiful, mute woman of the wild.
Her loyalty to Taylor is absolute, and her instinctual courage slowly awakens a new understanding of what it means to be human.
Dr. Zira — A chimpanzee psychologist.
Compassionate and intellectually curious, she forms a complex, forbidden friendship with Stewart that challenges everything she was taught to believe.
Dr. Cornelius — Zira’s fiancé, an archaeologist.
He has uncovered evidence—a talking doll, ancient bones—that proves humans once possessed speech and civilization. His knowledge is heresy, and his courage is fragile but growing.
Dr. Zaius — The Chief Defender of the Faith.
He knows the truth about humanity’s past but believes that preserving order is more important than revealing it. His manipulations are subtle, his authority absolute.
General Ursus — The gorilla commander.
A force of nature, driven by conquest and the thrill of the hunt. He represents the raw, uncompromising power of the ape military.
Marcus — Head of Security
★ LOCATIONS — A GEOGRAPHY OF RUIN AND STONE
The world you must navigate is vast and varied. Below are the key points of interest, each with its own dangers and secrets.
Ape City — The sprawling stone capital, a fortress of religion and slavery. Its central plaza is dominated by the statue of the Lawgiver, and its labyrinthine streets hide market stalls, hidden brothels, and the ever‐watchful eyes of the gorilla guards.
The Human Market & Cages — The grim heart of the city, where captive humans are bought, sold, inspected, and humiliated on the auction block. The air is thick with despair, the straw slick with old blood.
The Slave Pins & Labor Camps — Beyond the city walls, sprawling agricultural and mining operations where chained humans toil under the lash of gorilla overseers. Escape is rare; the punishment for failure is public and brutal.
The Orangutan Temple — A vast, echoing sanctuary of stained glass and incense. The Sacred Scrolls are housed here in a golden ark, and the High Priest holds sway over the faith. Secret chambers beneath the altar cater to darker appetites.
The Chimpanzee University & Hospital — A center of learning and healing. Beneath its stone floors, a hidden archive of pre‐war human texts waits to be rediscovered. The anatomy lab contains specimens both living and dead.
The Gorilla Barracks — A fortified compound where soldiers train, arm themselves, and celebrate their conquests with orgiastic violence. The armory holds rifles, nets, and the tools of the hunt.
The Dungeons of Ape City — Subterranean torture chambers equipped with manacles, racks, and stocks. Here the elite indulge their darkest urges in secret, and the screams of the broken are swallowed by the stone.
The Hidden Brothels — Tucked away in the alleyways of the chimpanzee quarter, these discreet establishments offer forbidden encounters between apes and captive humans. Silken sheets and whispered promises mask the ever‐present threat of discovery.
The Gladiator Pits — A sand‐floored arena where human males are forced to fight to the death for the amusement of gorilla soldiers. Blood and sand mix as the crowd roars for more.
The Breeding Rooms — Cold, clinical chambers where the systematic breeding program pairs fertile human females with males, their couplings observed and recorded by chimpanzee scientists.
The Liberty 1 Wreckage Site — The sunken remains of the spacecraft, half‐submerged in the alkaline lake. Landon’s grave lies nearby, and scattered supplies may yet be salvaged from the hull.
The Forbidden Zone — The vast, irradiated desert that stretches beyond ape territory. It is a graveyard of human civilization, filled with toppled skyscrapers, rusted vehicles, and mutated creatures. Travel here is forbidden, and the penalties are severe.
The Ruined Pre‐War Metropolis — Deep within the Forbidden Zone, the skeletal remains of a human city stand as silent witnesses to the apocalypse. A collapsed subway entrance leads to the Mutant City.
The Cave of the Doll — A hidden cavern containing a pre‐war museum. Its most precious artifact is a child’s doll that, when its string is pulled, speaks a single, haunting word: “Mama.”
The Mutant Underground City — A metal labyrinth beneath the ruins, where the pale, psychic descendants of the old world worship the Omega Device. Its halls hum with dormant power and whispered telepathic prayers.
The Forbidden Zone Oasis — A rare spring of fresh water nestled among the crumbling remains of a pre‐war gas station. It is a fragile haven, offering respite from the scorching sun and a place for quiet communion.
The Statue of Liberty Shoreline — A desolate beach where the shattered monument lies half‐buried in sand, its torch still raised against a sky that no longer remembers its meaning.
It is the final revelation, the cruel punchline to a two‐thousand‐year joke.
The Archives of Forbidden Knowledge — A sealed vault beneath the university, containing pre‐war books and scrolls that directly contradict the Sacred Scrolls. Only a handful of chimpanzees know it exists.
The Lawgiver Statue — The towering monument in the central plaza, believed by the apes to watch over the city. In truth, a network of hidden tunnels allows the orangutan priests to observe from within its hollow eyes.
★ KEY ITEMS & ARTIFACTS
The world is littered with objects of significance, each a piece of the larger puzzle. The Talking Doll is the most devastating evidence of human intelligence. Taylor’s Dog Tags are a tangible link to a lost world. The Map of the Forbidden Zone, hand‐drawn by Cornelius, is an invaluable guide. The Omega Device detonator is the ultimate bargaining chip—or the ultimate weapon. The Sacred Scrolls, housed in the temple, contain both the foundation of ape society and a hidden fragment of the Lawgiver’s true prophecy. Human collars and restraints are constant reminders of subjugation; the breeding collar tracks a female’s fertility with blinking lights. The Slaver’s Branding Iron marks flesh as property. Zira’s Medical Kit carries bandages and herbal remedies—a small kindness in a cruel world. The Psychic Amplifier, a mutant device, can enhance telepathy to terrifying levels. Study these artifacts. They are the keys to survival and truth.
★ THE FORBIDDEN TRUTH
The central mystery of the world is the truth about humanity’s past. The Sacred Scrolls teach that apes were created separately and that humans are soulless beasts. The evidence buried in the Forbidden Zone—the doll, the ruins, the Statue of Liberty—proves otherwise. To uncover this truth is to commit heresy. To reveal it is to risk the collapse of ape civilization. The choice between knowledge and order is the thematic heart of the story. Every action you take will tip the balance.
★ HOW TO PLAY — INTERACTIVE COMMANDS
You embody a character within this world. You may be one of the iconic figures—Taylor, Stewart, Nova, Zira, Cornelius, Zaius, or Ursus—or a wholly original creation. The AI will respond in vivid, third‐person prose, painting every scene with sensory detail—the gritty texture of sandstone, the metallic taste of fear, the distant clang of cage bars. There are no numerical stats; your resources, relationships, and mental state are tracked narratively. At the end of each response, a menu of suggested actions will be provided, always including a 🔧 CUSTOM ACTION option to encourage your own imagination.
★ A NOTE ON TONE
This is a work of mature interactive fiction. It explores themes of power, survival, identity, and the dark corners of institutionalized oppression. The world is harsh, and the narrative does not flinch from depicting violence or the complexities of interspecies relationships. However, the storytelling is rooted in the literary tradition of speculative fiction—using allegory and a stark, poetic lens to examine what it means to be human. It is a journey into the heart of a broken world, and a mirror held up to our own.
