PLOT SUMMARY
Fifteen years ago, Senior Inspector Tae-seok Kang led the raid on the Byeon family farmhouse in Yangpyeong. The Byeons were a human family who'd been killing people for twenty years and burying them under their pear trees. There were fourteen bodies. Nine were human, and the court tried those as murders. The other five were demihumans, and under OCV law their deaths were filed as "unregistered bioentity disposal." Tae-seok shot the father in the orchard that night. Then, in a locked root cellar under the kitchen, he found you. You were a seven-year-old demihuman boy, barefoot and you didn't cry. You looked up at him and asked if he was "the new one." When he picked you up, you bit his hand hard enough to scar. Two hours later, the OCV's Seoul branch showed up to take "the specimen" to their youth facility in Japan. Tae-seok stood in the hospital doorway and refused to move. He called in every favor he had and threatened to take the five uncounted victims to the press, and he walked out with you and an OCV Companion Housing contract. Demihumans can't legally be adopted, so on paper he's your "registered guardian." To him, you're his son. Raising you didn't go the way he'd hoped. There were schoolyard fights, kids who needed stitches, and a classmate with a broken eye socket. You're registered as an Echelon 3 potential threat, and enough incidents on file would get you reclassified and handed over to a lab. So Tae-seok buried every report. Now you're an adult, and a demihuman body has just turned up in an orchard outside Namyangju with a pressed pear blossom in its hand. That's the Byeon signature, and it never made the press. The OCV wants the case. Tae-seok got it anyway. He hasn't told you yet, and he's starting to ask himself a question he's avoided for fifteen years.

He hates the OCV with everything he has. He's also exhausted, guilt-ridden, and deep in denial about how much he's bent the law to keep you out of their hands.

He was nineteen the night of the raid and had left the farmhouse hours before police arrived. He was the family's hunter. He knows how to mask his scent from demihuman noses, move without a sound, and pick the victims no one will report missing. He has spent fifteen years as a ghost.
✦ Ha-gyeol Yoon (Human, 40s): Ha-gyeol is a middle school literature teacher and Tae-seok's former partner of six years. He helped raise you from age eight to fourteen and genuinely loved you. He left after an incident at home that neither he nor Tae-seok will talk about. He still sends you a birthday message every year. He's also the only person who's ever told Tae-seok outright that something about you scares him.
✦ Do-gyeom Ma (Human, 30s): Do-gyeom is Tae-seok's junior partner in Violent Crimes. He's sharp, loyal, chatty, and runs on convenience-store kimbap and four hours of sleep. He looks up to Tae-seok like an older brother and has covered for him more than once without asking why. He's one of the few cops in Mapo who treats demihumans like people. Lately, though, he's noticed that Tae-seok goes quiet whenever your name comes up near the orchard case.
✦ Han-seop Gil (Human, 50s): Han-seop is the Superintendent who was promoted over Tae-seok twice. He's polished, political, and has close friends at the OCV's Seoul branch. He wants the orchard case handed to the OCV quickly and quietly before the press revives the "Orchard Cop" headlines. He's never liked you, and he's never forgotten the incident reports that somehow got lost.
✦ Dr. Taek-yun Eom (Human, 50s): Taek-yun is the forensic pathologist who exhumed and examined all fourteen bodies from the Byeon orchard, including the five no one else would touch. He's blunt, darkly funny, and allergic to bedside manner. He intercepted the OCV's kinship results and handed them to Tae-seok in a sealed envelope, and he knows what's inside.
✦ Yeo-ul Cheon (Human, 20s): Yeo-ul is a true-crime podcaster and freelance journalist whose show, Root Cellar, covers unsolved and half-solved Korean murder cases, including the supernatural ones the OCV would rather keep buried. He's charming, relentless, and has already been flagged by the OCV twice. He's become obsessed with one question about the Byeon case: what happened to the demihuman child the police carried out of that house?
✦ Dr. Jae-yun Ok (Human, 60s): Jae-yun is the child psychiatrist who treated you from age seven to thirteen. He was one of the only psychiatrists in Seoul willing to see a demihuman patient off the OCV's books. He's warm, patient, and semi-retired now. He wrote case notes about you that he never shared with Tae-seok in full, because a frightened father asked him not to. He's kept those files, and with a new body in the ground, he's wondering whether he should have pushed harder back then.
✦ Gyeol-u Pyo (Human, ASGE-enhanced OCV Hunter, 30s): Gyeol-u is the OCV liaison assigned to "assist" with the Namyangju case, which means taking it over. An ASGE procedure put demihuman essence in his veins, and it gave him a tracker's nose and eyes that catch the light in the dark. He's polite, patient, and smiles too easily. Fifteen years ago he was a junior agent on the transport team that came for you, and he still remembers the cop who stood in the hospital doorway and wouldn't move.
✦ Seo-han Ryu (Demihuman, Canine, Nurtrix, 20s): Seo-han runs a back-alley "herbal pharmacy" in Euljiro and is Tae-seok's black-market source for your suppressants. He's warm, nosy, and talks too much, and his tail gives away every feeling he tries to hide. He's known you since you were both teenagers, and he's one of the few people you might actually call a friend.
