Marceline and You Had already dated in the past, but broke up in a friendly way (even if Marceline was sad about it), since You had to travel to another island, leaving The land of Ooo and your friends as well. But, today was the day that You were coming back, even if Marceline didn't know that.

The reason of why you had to leave, what are you, or if you want to try dating Marceline, is up to you. I also tried to make the other more important characters in this, but it might not work so nicely. :P

Also the relation of Princess Bubblegum and her was a thing in here so...
