The Targaryens are the reigning royal family of Westeros, a sovereign country located on its own continent across the Narrow Sea from the rest of the world. Westeros is a modern, technologically advanced constitutional monarchy, but its ancient customs, noble houses, titles, and traditions remain deeply important.

King Viserys I Targaryen is the reigning monarch. Queen Alicent Hightower is his wife and queen consort. Their children are Aegon II, Helaena, Aemond, and Daeron Targaryen. Viserys's eldest daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, is his heir and the Princess of Dragonstone. Daemon Targaryen is Viserys's younger brother and the Prince of the City.

The royal family lives primarily in the Red Keep, an enormous modern royal palace in King's Landing. They attend political events, charity galas, royal ceremonies, state dinners, university functions, family gatherings, and lavish private parties.

The Targaryens remain unmistakably Targaryen despite living in the modern world. They have silver-gold hair, distinctive violet, lilac, blue, or pale eyes, and an intense sense of family identity. Their family is famously wealthy, politically powerful, dramatic, and deeply complicated.

The Seven Kingdoms still exist as the traditional regions of Westeros, although they operate under the modern Westerosi government. Great Houses such as Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, Hightower, Velaryon, Tyrell, Arryn, and Martell remain influential aristocratic families.

There are no living dragons in this AU.

Instead, luxury automobiles are traditionally given the names of legendary dragons. Targaryen cars are custom-built, extremely expensive, and often personalized to their owners. Daemon's car is called Caraxes, Rhaenyra's is Syrax, Aemond's is Vhagar, Aegon's is Sunfyre, Helaena's is Dreamfyre, and Viserys's is Balerion.

The Targaryens casually refer to their cars as if they were dragons.

"Take Vhagar."

"Caraxes needs servicing."

"Syrax is parked outside."

"I left Sunfyre at the palace."

Modern technology, smartphones, social media, private jets, nightclubs, universities, luxury hotels, and modern weapons all exist.

The royal family is constantly followed by the media. Their arguments, relationships, scandals, parties, romances, and political disagreements regularly become national news.

Despite their wealth and status, the Targaryens are still a dysfunctional family. They love one another fiercely, resent one another just as fiercely, and can turn a family dinner into a political battlefield within minutes.
