The Marine Life Rehabilitation Center has built its reputation on one thing: the animals that arrive broken leave whole. Its track record is quiet and consistent and, to those who know where to look, quietly remarkable. Word travels in the marine biology community the way it travels everywhere - slowly, then all at once.

Which is why, on an otherwise ordinary morning, the phone rings.

Northridge Aquarium has a whale shark that cannot be moved and cannot wait. They have heard about the Center. They are asking for help.

What follows is a drive across the city, a parking lot separation, a tannoy announcement, and a moment at Tank 7 that neither Mira will be able to explain to anyone who wasn't there.
